Hood/Bonnet scoop/vents...

Want to put a SMALL rearward facing bonnet scoop (or small slotted vents or something) on the hood of my TJ to aid in letting hot air escape from under the hood. Not setup as a ram (facing forward), but as a vent (facing rearward) to promote airflow through the radiator and out of the engine bay...

Looking for suggestions on what scoop, where to source it, etc.

I think some of the Patrols have nice small scoops on the hoods, but don't know which ones or where to look.

Any suggestions appreciated.

nissan patrol scoop is nice and clean looking.
Mitsubishi 2010 NT DID Pajero wagon, Factory rear diff lock, Dual batteries, ARB bar, winch, Mt ATZ 4 rib tyres.

I just cut 5 x 2" holes on the back of my bonnet. Looks almost performance car like but it is effective. You could also source some vents from some of the performance falcons or even old Cressidas I think had bonnet vents. Another option is to block the rear of bonnet up so it sits with a small gap at the back to help air flow

Got some 316 stainless jobs from my local marine shop. Cost me $20 each and did the same thing you want to on my old spook. Faced them rearward and worked like a dream. And looked pretty trick to.

Look similar to these but only 4 vents not 6..

i run a patrol scoop on my tj...but facing fowards....the only thing u have to watch with the patrol ones are that that arnt actually square....the front edge is on a slight angle to the back one....only because they r normally mounted on the side of the bonnet of a patrol, so i guess they want it to follow the curved edge of the grill...but u dont notice it unless u really look hard ;)

Lots of jap wreckers have 2nd hand bonnet scoops off ricers etc depends if you want a nice low profile vent of a prostock maccas bin lid,

i like the ford falcon idea... i think sorta the 1995-1999 ish models are the ones.. they have 2 nice low profile lookigs vents.. one either side of the apex(middle ridge) of the bonnet.. bonus is being off a ford there should be plenty at the wreckers..

Lift the rear of ya bonnet. just pack it up with washers. flows well, its cheap. and low profile.

Not good in a big front ender accident, it will come thru screen and use your headrest for a stop...

Lifting the rear of the bonnet makes it look CRAP (just my opinion).
It makes it look like you have had an accident in your front end and your bonnet doesnt fit anymore.
I saw some nice looking fiberglass loovered vents in at Auto Pro a while back but they had no holes!!!
Damn Ricers :roll: Vents that are just for looks.

One question about bonnet vents. Does it let more water flow into the engine bay while doing water crossings?
It would vent the pocket of air in the back of the engine bay allowing it to fill with water more easilly would it not?

i use a wrx scoop on my 4b its low profile but still lets air out
altho not yet as i havent had enuf time to cut out a hole for it lol
u could use el xr6/8 bonnet vents they r awesome on turbocharged motors cos u put em above the turbo and it gets rid of all the hot air

The Patrol vents are on the GU 3 Litre Diesels (4.2TD also??) they apparently run around $112 now.

A problem with venting air out the rear of the bonnet by packing or by a scoop will be that you will run a greater possibility of getting a bonnet load of water through any deep water crossings. The bonnet lid effectively seals in the underbonnet air bubble keeping everything dry. You will quickly lose any advantage a bow wave may have given you, and end up driving a "catamaran" (two wheelarch areas with water flowing between them) instead of a "monohull" (wheelarch areas linked by air bubble).

After cutting big gaping holes in my inner guards on my zuk when I errr "expanded the wheel arch to run bigger rubber" I have not really noticed this to be much of an issue .. motor etc seems to get a bit dirtier .. but nowhere near as much as I expected (even in windsreen deep bogholes) ..

That's because you are not letting the air out at the top of the bonnet. You would still be getting the "bubble effect" up to the level of the highest point of your "trimmed" inner guard. If you had a hole in the bonnet you could guarantee a waterlogged engine (breathers, electricals, etc.) if you momentarily lose momentum off the bow wave.

Just remember a rear opening scoop will get you a instant deffect notice the reason being if something in the engine bay blows you end up with oil all over the winscreen ive been deffected before

Yeah, that was Daless2 from JU (I think)...he did a heap of testing to ascertain the best location for the vents. If you do a search on the Jeepsunlimited forum there's a huge thread on it.
