suspension question for hilux

Post by 89flatout »

I currently have 31" bridgestone desert duelers on my hilux and i was wondering with a 2 -3 inch lift would i be able to run 33's ? other question is would it be bad for my drivetrain components to run the 33's ? As far as i know all gearing and diff's are stock same with driveshaft.... I would like to eventually run 35's with lockers front and rear but i need to know what size lift to go with to fit the 33's for a temporary amount of time before i go with beadlocked 35's. i dont want it to turn out to be the definition of "ROLUX".. i will be posting pics asap

Best best do a search it's been covered plenty and look through members thread's and pm a few guy's best bet would be move the diff 35mm foward so shorter draglink shorter torque rod or do hi steer that way you can change it to 50+mm foward when it comes time for 35's and front shaft will need to be lenghtend roughly how far the diff goes foward can be done with a spacer or retube the tailshaft longer
plenty of parts on the bench

best way to stop it being a rollux is to keep it low and wide, keeping in mind that a hilux with 33's or better still 34's and a lifted crossmember will go as far as a pootrol with with 35's. Steering wise i'm running snake racing relocation plates in the front and modified torque rod and drag link with 34 inch simex's , but for 35's you may want to go to the next step with ruf wich won't be a cheap exercise if you do it properly. i.e. high steer.

other thing petrol or diesel and it depends on how much you like your car running away on you down hills and how much you like flogging it up hills.

2inch spring lift and 2inch cab lift will cover u for 33s if u dont wanna cut ur guards up move ur diff forward 30+mm u can do this without high steer, also if i was doing this id fit aftermarket cv,s as i think ud be breaking them a bit if u where doing seriouse off roading.

its 2.8 3L diesel.... yah i would love to get the 35's but i can still do quite a bit with the 33's .. went to local 4wd shop in perth and got some quotes on the 2inch lift with 2 inch body lift... im looking at reconditiong the motor as well as new transfer case and cluth... I have a feeling i may destroy them soon considering i do some hard offroading on a 346'000km motor and original tranny and semi new clutch haha... anything else i should be aware of going out on the lux ? Also looking for a good place to pick up these parts new and used ? Any advice on this would sure help.

cheers , dan

What are you going to use the truck for? If you want good flex then you will want longer leaf springs. If you want to go to 35's later go with a 3" kit no body lift.

my 83 lux runs 33s (33x12.5x15) onroad and offroad and it is great runs lower rpm on the highway and it runs great. i only have a 2 inch body lift and i think it has sagged 2 inch springs. the back doesnt scrub the front just touches the inner guard near where the mud flap attaches to the body. offroad mine doesnt run away in low range first often ill be sitting on 2000 to 3000 rpm (max) and it will climb anything, btw it is the 2.4 diesel.
downhills it is to slow in low range sometimes and you need to give it some gas.
i used to run 31 inch tyres and these have mad it great offroad and it is pretty easy to fit them under.
I cannot justify why i would ever need 35's. maybe a decent set of 34's would be good. i put up with the scrubbing on mine because i like mine low and wide like bracar80 said. i have cruiser offset rims as well. no damage has happened to the tyre or guard from scrubbing as it only gets the back of the mudflap so its flat rubber.

it depends on wat your going to use the car for. mines my daily to so i cant mod it to much

ya for now its a daily driver  ..... i should be fine running the 33x10.50's i was thinking BFG mud terrains or A/T's but the road noise on the mudders suck.... i would love to lock it front and rear but since it is a daily driver a lockrite autolocker in the rear would destroy the tires and with manual steering the cornering is bad enough... anybody know off the top of their head what it would cost to reseal my 3L diesel fuel injection pump with the injectors done as well.. ? Ive been quoted around $1500 including labor at numerous shops around perth.

That sounds about right for the full overhaul- I paid $480 the other day for reco injectors for a 1KZ-TE, and a pump about 5yrs ago for a full overhaul was $1200.

But if they are only doing seals, then its a bit rich.

just head to the wreckers and get a second hand injector pump. seals arent to hard to do. you should be able to do some yourself if im right. and yeh i run 33 by 12.5 wide as buggery. doesnt make it that hard to drive and it still does highway speeds slows down on hills and since having the tyresi havent had any broken drivetrain components so yeh as long as u drive them conservitavely (spelling) then it should be ok.

ive got an 86 hilux just put 33x 12.5x15 on and with little or no lift they rub when off road (even rubbed when i hit a driveway a bit hard). Im getting 2" blocks made up will let u know wat difference it makes. i was all for the bash it with a hammer idea but it looks too much body needs to be moved.

Not sure what the lift on my springs is, but I'd assume about 4 inches, I also run a 3" body lift, the only Issue I have is the front pumpkin hitting the sump of the 308 at full compression, I've also fitted 37's on it with no issue
