Which year Hilux?

Hey all,

OK im looking to buy a Hilux but don't know which model I should be aiming for.

Not too worried about the configuration but id probably rather a single cab to get the most tray space.

Ive only had experience with an older model (80-something) and a newer 2000 3.0L.
Both were my Dad's, the old one seemed very bullet proof but old and slow, the newer one he has spent a heap of money on as it keeps breaking (engine blew, gearbox blew multiple times)

Is this typical of the newer models??

Any advice appreciated, I want to spend around 15K.

I would suggest getting a mid 90s lux.
buy a new crate motor from toyota, and get the box and diffs done.
New car for under 15k
reliable, robust, slow, but reliable :)

Any preference on the engine?
Id prefer a diesel.
Ive driven the 3L with a turbo kit and it goes pretty well I thought, rather not have a turbo vehicle though for insurance cost reasons.

I think you will find when you say its diesel, insurance companies won't worry to much even if its an after market turbo. If you are worried about it I would just phone a few of them up before you make a decision.

My insurance company (aust 4wd insurance) Didnt even give a toss when i threw the old 2.8D out and chucked in a new 3.0L turbo diesel with 25kw/129nm MORE power into the old girl!

Oh OK, no worries then! :cool:

I only have one example to go off but is the gearbox failure a common issue with these?
Dad is sick to death of his 2000 model, had so many troubles with it. :x

as long as you restrain yourself and dont drop a 3.0TD or big petrol in front of them, the G52 is a pretty reliable box.

The instant you start to feed more power or torque into it tho, it becomes a frag grenade!
