Engine conversion from 2.8 non turbo to 3.0 turbo???

Post by pigglet »

My surf has a standard 2.8 non turbo engine in it and it sometimes struggles to power my lil ass 32s!!!!

I was debating whether to just turbo this engine i already have or just wait and chuck a 3.0 engine in it and turbo that instead.

Cost wise, which one would work out better and would be easier to fit?

Costs.

To turbo the 2.8D- Anywhere between $500 for a CT20 off a 2L-T surf to $3500 for a brand spanking new turbo kit for the 2.8D.

I wouldnt bother even considering thowing in a a 5L 3.0L motor and turboing it- Out of the box, the 3.0L made 65kw/197nm vs the 2.8Ds 60kw/186nm, It wasnt till the 5L-E that they got 71kw/200nm and to get that your running an ECU anyway, so you might as well go the 86kw/315nm 1KZ-TE 3.0L factory turbo diesel.

to fit a 3.0TD, you start at $5000 for the engine, Add $2000 for the gearbox, $1200 for the loom (or buy a halfcut for $5500 like i did) and then double that to get final figures.

I budgeted $10K to do my engine swap on my LN106 hilux (2.8D->3.0TD) and came in at $12K at the end- but that included $1800 of diffs, lockers and winch.

The 1KZ swap is NOT a weekend job- its relatively easy, all you need to do is move the engine mounts about 57-60mm, but then you have a beautiful rats-nest of wiring to deal with- I ended up pulling my entire dashboard out, guards off, cabin apart and swapped the whole KZN130 surf front loom into the place of the LN106 front loom.

Read on from there- thats the summary of my efforts!

ha sounds like if i wanted a 3.0L i may as well just buy one that has got it factory.
So plans will go with chuckin a turbo on the 2.8 instead.
What pars would i need to supply in order to do so? Iv been told i need this special injector pump which i found at the wreckers the other day and got it just in case i needed it.

The guy i brought truck off originally has got the turbo manifold, turbo itself and a few important hoses for a couple of bucks.

What other parts would i need to do so?

exhaust manifold
turbocharger
oil feed/return line (you will need to extend these and tap into oil pressure feed and put a 3/4" fitting in the sump for oil return (as high as possible)
dump pipe
mate the exhaust up (or better to put a whole 2.5 or 3" system on instead)
crossover pipe or intercooler seup.

hose/clamps etc.

pyro and boost gauge recommended.

most just wind up the fuel on the standard pump but better to get a pump with an aneroid (boost compensator) then get the pump tuned by a reputable diesel tuner...

What bout if i were to scrap the idea of turboing it and just supercharge it so i can get a more low down torque as apposed to a turbo. Which one would work out the chepest, easiest and most effective?

Cost is almost the same actually.

If you don't want to spend on a 1kz factory turbo 3.0l then there are two options for you:

1. Turbo the 2.8 with a CT 20..........You'll soon be complaining.
2. Install a 5l, 3.0 engine and put a CT 20 on.

I would go for option 2 if you don't want a 1kz.

the 3l is a 2.8litre the 5l is a 3.0litre, i wouldnt waste your time putting a 5l in, they make bugger all more power over the 3l. get a ct20 turbo setup, get the turbo hi flowed and intercool it so you can run a little more boost safely.

the CT20 is getting onto the too small size for a 3L motor, and the 5L would be even worse.

The 1KZ doesnt run a CT20- It runs a CT-12B. Might be a better option

iv managed to get the turbo manifold and all the hoses and shit from a 2LTE i think he said it was. It bolts straight onto the 2.8 engine supposably.

Just gotta swap 2 studs in the head- the holes are drilled and tapped already, and cut and rotate the gasket.

Im seriously contemplating giving my old 2.8D a quick tidyup, buying a surf with a blown 2.4TD in it for $1500-2000, slapping the turbo gear onto the 2.8D and throwing that in and then selling the whole shebang for $7-8K

People keep telling me there are all these really rare parts that i need and the i find out they arent even needed hah

5L turboed by CT20

Post by LiaU79 »

hi everyone ..
i'm a beginner here ..
i'm using a LJ70
1KZTE is powerful ..
but last time in drag race here in my place ..
1KZTE lost to 5L turboed by CT26 or garret AR60 or something ..
and now the overboost 1KZTE already cracked its head ..
the 5LT still ok ..
maybe the engine is not well tuned thats why ..
