Prado Vs Patrol

Post by BPB02 »

Hi all, i am looking at upgrading my 89 hilux to something a bit newer and smoother. I am looking at a prado or patrol i will mainly be doing beach work with the occasional bush work.

I have got $30000 to spend and i am leaning towards the prado any replys would be great

Thanks

also are pajeros really as crap as every one seems to make them out to be??

they arnt called the "Wanker" for nothing :)

not really a fair comparison between a IFS and a solid axle rig afaik

Prado vs paj is a lot closer, as far as the paj, they are both decent vehicles and reasonably strong. both have there pros/cons.

If you are going to be only doing mild wheeling like beach stuff and do most of your driving on road then the Prado for sure. They are very comfortable and are capable enough for most mild to medium stuff.

I don't know about overall, but I don't hear too much about Pajeros blowing diffs. I can't say the same about Prados. :P

Prado and Patrols should not be compared. Totally different 4wd's.

The Paj's are a capable 4wd when drive right, It's just embarrassing to be seen driving one :D

The Prado's are a good 4by. SIL bought one, put on cooper st's and a 2" lift and crossed the simpson without a worry. Good long range fuel capacity standard, easy to get parts and aftermarket goodies. (Not saying that the paj doesn't have this either).

From what you are saying I would think the prado a better buy. If looking at patrols, I personally would not cosider the 3.0lt. Many people swear by them, but alot more swear at them.

Its simple.
Get the patrol. And yes the 4.2 turbo.
Nissan got it right with that motor and the only reason it got a gay little 3L is because of a couple of tofu eating knobs.
To tofu... :finger:

Hi all...For what you say you want to use the vehicle for,i would say the Prado, simply because it will be much more economical,go better and better to drive. But if you said you wanted a capable offroader,i would say the 4.2TD Patrol.

It it was my money, and I had your needs a would go a petrol prado.

Convinced a mate to buy one and he could not be happier.

Not interested in a petrol vs diesel debate that sort of comment always brings on, just stating my view.

he gets 16lt / 100 around town (lives in st lucia brisbane)

this is proving to be harder than i thought, how are the 4.2 td patrols on fuel i would be guesing they would be pretty damn thirsty.

I am pretty sure i will stay away from the 3 ltrs due to reading about the problems they have.

I ahvnt heard anything bad about the prados but there isnt a real lot of information out about them, does any one no of any problems they have??

My GU 4.2 turbo (its for sale too ;) ) used 16ltrs/100km towing boats for the melbourne boat show at the start of the year. None of the boats were under 2500kg, and i tow at 100km/hr (bit more a few times, slow ass bastards in the fast lane sh1t me ;) ). If i'm driving nicely at 100km/hr not towing, best i've got is 11ltrs/100km. I've turned the fuel up alot, added a fair bit more boost, did the timing and got a 3" mandrel exhaust. I have no complaints with the fuel usage of it.

I think we all know why he is happy, and it's not the car - its the extra space in the back ;) :D

The 4.2td patrol is excellent and reliable. But it is not a 'town' car, compared to the Prado. But they are pretty sluggish and fairly thirsty.

I get about 12L/100km on the highway normally, and up to 18L/100km doing 110kph heavily loaded, beach, etc.

Around town is about 12-13L/100km. I have had my turbo upgraded and dyno'd, which made it a bit better on fuel (worth doing!!)

I have two mates with 3.0Ls, and despite the bagging they are ok if looked after, aka 'Rovers. But use computers, etc, like the Prado and Cruiser, Rover, etc.

They get around 11L/100km on the highway, and 12L/100km around town, and 15-16L/100km heavily loaded. The 3.0Ls have more 'upper' power (overtaking, putting the foot down)

which is evened out by their lack of power below 2000rpm. Off boost the ZD30 is a DOG of a motor.

Its a sad thing when a 1HZ powered troopy can run away from a ZD30 powered patrol

Just put a deposit down on a shiney new diesel Prado.

Now I get to have fun setting it up.
Unfortunately the 80 has to go.

Anyone want a T/D 80 series with all the good bits?

Out of curisoty .. what sort of "bad things" ?
I know the 3.0 diesals have their share of motor issues, and the 2.8's are gutless .. but what other "bad things"

The 4.2 diesals are pretty well indestructable and 4.8 petrols are much the same (thirsty but bloody tough).

Prado's and Patrols are two different beasts.

Prado: Comfy, better on-road, great for easy/moderate wheeling, great all round tourer and mums taxi.

Patrol: Bit more ruff and rugged, can be set up for black-top touring right through to tuff truck and extreme winch comps. Absolute plethora of aftermarket and second hand goodies, and the average backyarder can carry out most repairs and maintenence.

There's probably a wider range of Patrols on the market to choose from.

God love the TD42T.......

you've been driving some unhealthy patrol zd30's.

zd30 patrol changing gears at 2000rpm will run away from my td42 gq with me (trying) to accelerate.

without problem. and in the traffic light grand prix i can tell you that i am neither faster nor slower than a 1hz 80 series.

Infact we both got beaten by a brisbane city council natural gas powered bus. they should ban street racing between diesel 4wds......all we did was make alot of noise and leave alot of diesel soot on the poor sods behind us. it was really quite hillarious.

They dont make them anymore. And people who own them arn't selling them, for a bloody good reason.

I'm getting a prado, mainly cause the other options, are either too expensive, I dont like, or I just dont trust.....the last being the patrol.
