How to remove hand brake-drum, GU Patrol

Post by A.J. »

Hey guys, I have a little problem here.

I want to replace my brake pads for the hand brake.
This is obviously a transmission brake-drum and sits between the tailshaft and the xfer case.

I have removed the tailshaft but I just cannot get the drum off.
I tapped it with a hammer all around but it doesn't budge.

Is there any tricks? Or is there no way if you don't have a puller?

Your help will be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers

A.J.

Allright, problem solved, you will never guess how I got it off......

I just turned on the engine, put it in gear (no tailshaft) and pulled the
handbrake a few times...... "PLONK" the drum just fell off

NOW, HOW DO I CHANGE THE PADS???

From memory, you have to remove the retaining spring first, then there should be one retainer on each shoe that you have to rotate 90 degrees to release each shoe including the springs, seat and pins. I think you then have to remove the afew more springs and the acutator and handbrake mechanism.

Let me know if this helps or I will dig out the Gregory's (mines a GQ but pretty sure they are the same).

Yeah I did take out both retaining springs (the ones you have to rotate the plate).

But the pads are still "stuck" at the top. There is two more springs but I haven't figured out yet how to undo them....

I haven't done any work on drum brakes before. Discs are easy but those drums got me buggered  ;)

where abouts you at, its a bit too late now but i could have come and dont it for ya, a PITA without specialist tools like multi grips and a couple of big screwdrivers.

Just google how to change drum brake pads. all pretty well the same setup

I'm in Liverpool mate. I appreciate your offer mate.

I've done way harder things but I've just never touched drums before

I've got the two retaining springs out that hold each of the pads in place but there are another 2 pins at the top that seem to have circlips at the end. And the other two springs at the top that lok very hard to unhook......

I'll find out somehow ;)

ahh yeah the top clips are prob a horse shoe shape, a real pita some times. Use a large screwdriver ,etc and hammer and hit the end to pop them off a bit then leaver em out.

The top srings id say will come apart easy once you can remover the pads completley, if not insert large screwdriver and lever them off. may need help of large multi grips to pull on em.
