Clutch or Gearbox Issue??

Post by gravel »

Gday - ive recently had a thread regarding a constant ticking noise in my 03 TD Hilux.

Whenever i put the clutch in even a little bit the noise goes away, it will then return once my foot is taken off the clutch again.

So in short - clutch out = constant ticking noise / clutch in = noise stops.

Now ive had some advice that it is probably the thrust bearing, ive done some research and this seems to be an inherent problem in Hilux - so ive priced it up and a new clutch kit is gonna cost me $850 fitted.

I'm now having a few people saying that it might be the Input Shaft Bearing in the gearbox...

Can anyone offer some opinions re this as obviously i dont want to replace the clutch and have the problem still exist.

Is it more likely a clutch issue or a gearbox issue????

Any help would be great.

I'd run with thrust race - if you can afford to have the car off the road for a few days, drop the box, have the input bearing checked and see if you can source a thrust race sans the clutch kit (unless the clutch looks like it needs replacing) - my MK Triton had clutch replacement at ~155k but I abused the crap out of it, mates is still going strong at ~220k

Thrust bearings usually make a noise when the clutch is depressed, input shaft bearings usually make noise when the clutch is released & in the first three gears, going away in 4th.

I doubt it will be a noisy thrust bearing persay because it will be a rumbling noise, same with the input bearing. If it is a light ticking noise then the thrust bearing retaining clips may have broken or it might be a spring in the dual mass flywheel.

Get someone to look at it, its a bit hard to diagnose a noisy fault over the internet.

Yep mate its there when in gear and driving along and also when its stationary in neutral.

The only time it isnt there is when my foot is on the clutch.

Input bearing. Does it go away in 4th? That is when the load goes off the front bearing.

i was going to say that it seems common to the R151F gearbox, except your HDJ80 would have a H150F in it, the Hilux has an R150F and the prado has the R151F!

Diesel gearboxes do rattle too, mine rattles when I let the clutch out but its just backlash, not noisy bearings.

Mate the noise is still there when it's in 4th.... if it's not the input bearing any other ideas what it could be...??

Some people have suggested it might be something hitting on the flywheel...??

Another suggestion is it might be a clutch release bearing... any thoughts on that one??
