What's with the fascination in chequerplate?

Post by TheOtherLeft »

What's with everyone's love with chequerplate. I see it's used in everything from toolboxes to bash plates to tray tops.

Is it stronger/stiffer then the equivalent flat sheet? I suppose it would be since it does have more material then plain flat sheet.

Plus it would get dirtier then flat sheet.

I agree it has it's uses where grip is required but on things like bash plates it would actually be detrimental wouldn't it?

I had it on my tray on the Zuk puely because I got it cheap. i hated the look of it, it was a pain to keep clean, it was soft so it gouged and dented easily and it just looks crap I reckon. I wished I had saved a bit more and bought flat sheet instead.

Its easy to look good.

Its hard to clean but once clean it hides scratches etc very easily.

Bash plates though ? :? :?

For trays and toolboxes, ally is light. Looks better than flat sheet once it becomes 'used'. Used to cover panels ie Sierra back corners not to bad, used as bash plates no, as reviously mentioned go the stainless.

It really depends on what checker plate you mean.

* Alloy checker is ok on boxes etc
* Rubber checker is crap but ute beds ok
* Floormat checker scream supercheap
* Stainless checker shiney good for trucks
* Stick on checker is crap
* Steel checker tough. durable.

Got steel checkerplate? :D This is mine. Covers bent tailgate as well as light housings for num plate etc. Kept getting smashed lights in the stocko bumper..

ckecker plate is used on boxes and things because

it dosent show twists, pulls or buckling when welded up as boxes ect

and i agree it looks shit

flat sheet looks bloody good when fitted correctly

i like it :)

flat sheet looks great, until you put the first dent in it, then it looks shit.

diamond plate looks good do matter how many dents and gouges it has.

it gives the vehicle an industrial look.

I know heaps of people do this - aren't you concerned about the plate coming loose and slicing you up in the event of an accident? At least the steel body panels all have rolled edges and would be more prone to bending than coming loose or fracturing...

just curious if i'm the only one who isn't too keen on alloy door panels for this reason :D
