Oil cooler on SD33T
Oil cooler on SD33T
Anyone put a oil cooler on a SD33T? Would it be worthwhile? I heard its the turbo's heating the oil which cause the temps on these motors to get so high.

Check you temperature guage. I thought mine was overheating but when it wasnt using any coolant i thought mmmmm...
Had the gauge cheked by a sparky & found it to be reading too high. Mine was going over 3/4 before the cluch fan cut in.
Is it over fuelling. If it is then combustion temps will be high causing exahust temps to be high causing turbo temp to be high. Mine ran hotter because the thing was overfuelling. Was ok once I repaired problem.

Its not only the Turbo models that do this.....
All of the SD33's ive had have been non-turbo and they have all over heated slowly at speeds anything over 100km's, also they cook abit offroad.
An oil cooler may be worth while if your intending on keeping it as they are pretty dear last time i priced them......
U could get the radiator re cored to a 5 core for cheaper and will work much better.

pretty sure sd33 and sd33t have oil coolers already, oil/water type on the side of the block near the injector pump, so a better radiator may keep the oil temp at bay.
If you went for a oil/air style cooler it would probably work well but you'd be wise to fit a temperature controlled bypass valve so the oil gets up to temp, as oil offers more protection at the correct temperature.
My shorty has a sd33 and has never had a temp problem except when holding it between 120-130 for a long time, which is rare, and is fine off road.

Oil Cooler
There is an oil cooler on the side of the block on drivers side near inj. pump but it don't look like normal cooler.
I have driven a heap a petrols and Diesels - out of the 20 something I owned I have NEVER had one overheat - sure one got warm but it didn't help havin a stuck thermostat did it???
Even the truck we take shooting which revs at 3600rpm to 4100 or more doesn't over heat on 38 degree day with a full load on the highway going up hill - she doesn't often get over half way...
My chev doesn't even get 2 mm off the cold bar - not the bottom but the tmark 5mm from the cold bit... but thats got wonderful twin VT Commodore Thermo fans on it.... OH _ Sorry Screwy - didn't mean to rub it in mate....

Screwy - this is true but who is your fav. discount parts supplier??? Who gives you free stuff when you need it???
As for overheating - the cooler is pretty darn small on the motor - it would be interesting to see if you could use a trans cooler or something??? sure there are many other things to check before that thought??? Have you flushed the oil galeries??? These is some stuff u can put in em and it works a treat hey.... may be worth a thought????

Comming from a Drag racing background I would fit an external oil filter addaptor where your oil filter fits. This will allow you to run an external oil fiter and cooler. You can get some realy good external oil filters that you can clean and reuse. As for oil coolers there are quite a few to pic from.

I take that as a comment from a person that hasnt ever driven one.
My current SD33 will get to 135 in relitevily short time concidering and it will hold it there no dramas, the only concern is that is slowly overheats after about 10 mins or so and u have to drop back to 100 for the same time.
My old SD33 before i put the V8 in, I had clicking off the end of the speedo at 160km's per hour, and the revs were still increasing and the speedo couldnt go any further around.
The 2 times i did this i didnt check the temp reading, but i know they they should all get to 130-140 on average on 4.625 diffs.
On anything higher than that it should get there easier.

Id like to know too! ive got a stock sd33 with 4speed and it tops out downhill at 115kph! im sure 5th would be nice but thats nowhere near 135.. just put 35's on which will prob make it worse especially on hills..Marz's Mad MQ wrote:hey

My turbo i ran out to 160 when i first got it a few months ago
and my old sd33 used to get to 120 on the odd occasion but not very often, had a mate with a standard sd33 and he used to go past me like a was standing still, that thing flew.

Probably get 140 flat out, as soon as you hit a head wind or hill its like someone throws a parachute out though!
Comparing that to my GQ lwb td42 it can get around 150ish, not a huge difference in power, noticeably taller in each gear due to 4.3 diffs.

I owned one about 6 years ago when i lived in Tas, and on a cold night it'd hammer. I'd get 130-140 on a straight, and 160+ down a hill. 120,000 km, non-turbo, 4 speed. Screaming its tits out, crap economy and wandering all over the road at anything over 110. Standard diffs and 33'' BFG's.
