Cam belts & Dirt

Post by NJV6 »

Has anyone tried either successfully or not to seal up the front timing covers?

Having had a blinder of a weekend which included dirty water holes, out of interest I took one of the top timing covers off and was amazed at the amount of dirt in there. Radiator was almost fully blocked with mud

And I can bet this does no favours to cam belt life. At this stage I thinking of taking all the front covers off and trying to seal them up, mcgyvering a seal around the bottom pully and somehow glueing it to the cover.

my scudo has broken 2 cam belts in 3 years of off road, lastr one i replaced looked like it had done 200 000ks after 600ks of off roading, are the cam belts hard to do on the 12valve 6g72 as it will be getting the same treatment, also are the 6g72s an interferance motor?, cheers
