Possible timing problem? hates warm startsl Help

Post by parko75 »

Hey all, i got a 97 sierra. i go to acellerate in second gear and it dies for a second then come back alive, I have no idea what it could be. It also happens sometimes when taking off in first. Also i hates warm starts, takes forever to kick over, could this be as simple as taking it to the mehcanic and getting him to tune it up?

Cheers steve

Start with the basics first…
Make sure that it's serviced at regular intervals ie, new plugs, oil and filters.

The symptoms you described with 'hesitation' in second and first gear could be your leads arcing. Many years ago my coil lead was arcing out where it touched my bonnet.

if its a carby engine, then its the carby that the problem, you are experiancing a flat spot, it would be there in all gears but felt far less.

When you put your foot down, the carby squirts in a extra amount of fuel, when it doesn't do this properly, a flat spot is felt. If memory serves me correctly, its called piston plunger that gives it the extra squirt.

Best way to sus out if this is the prob, take the air filter supply off so you can look down the throat, and get the throttle linkage and give it a turn, if it has a good squirt of fuel, then thats good, if not, if its weak or not there, there is yr problem.
If it breaks, excellent, time for an upgrade

Check all your leads plugs and distributor.
My zook did this and a new points and leads fixed it.
Maybe a new coil while your at it too. But check the cheaper stuff first.

ive had this a few times with the motor in my sierra although its not a suzuki motor, its a carby 1.6L . every time i have had the identical thing happen its been crap in the main jet and it really gives me the shits ! haha.

if you can , check the carby bowl and jets and possibly the fuel filter for contamination. if you fill the filter up with fuel and pump a compressor into it you can usually blow a lot of stuff out of it and it will last a long time before you need to get a new filter (yeah im a tightarse haha).
