On the heading it said low kilometer imports, and the photos looked like they were very good condition sec hand cars from japan.
If i had the money i'd get one and do everything to get it to be a really fast motor.

Re: 12 ht imports
My old one in the 60 was boosting only 11psi and with a 5spd, smoked a BRAND NEW 2006 landcruiser muster ute. He was not happy. Also smoked numerous 80 series with 4.2 turbo's, it was by far the fastest 60 i or anyone that seen it go, had ever come across.60 mad wrote:On the heading it said low kilometer imports, and the photos looked like they were very good condition sec hand cars from japan.

Very tough motors.

My old mans is stock with 281,400 on it and goes pretty hard for an old motor but i'd love to up the boost, 3 inch straight through zorst, intercooler, lpg injection and whatever else it needs.

Looks clean, yeh i had no muffler at all, 2.5 inch from turbo down under the firewall and 3inch all the way out no muff, it sounded like a truck and the sound of the turbo spool up was magic

Yeah it's clean because my old man hates getting it dirty
You would be missing your old motor now that you have a boat anchor 2f

I was looking at imports the other day just do a google search for 60 imports but they were expensive and looked weirdthrashlux wrote:How much is it for a import 60 with one allready fitted????
would not be much more
concider it a packing crate
for an extra 2 grand you could get a 1HDFTE with heaps more grunt and use less fuel to

Get out there!!
Would be interested to see what sort of economy a 1HDTFE gets, my near on stock 12-HT with over 400K on the clock was getting close to 9klm per litre driving back and forward to work, half highway, other half reasonably fast moving 60k zone.for an extra 2 grand you could get a 1HDFTE with heaps more grunt and use less fuel to
Best thing about a 12-HT, stuff all electronics!!! My alternator died on me on the way back to Carins from Hinchinbrook (approx 2 hour drive) but no worries, I could still drive home and just use the battery for indicators and brake lights. Try doing that with a late model turbo diesel....
An issue to watch if you buy a 12-HT:
Here is a piston that came out of my engine before I rebuilt it. Note the top ring groove has been hammer out to nearly twice its width for about half of the piston diameter.
Yes, it was still running and running ok! I only found it as I pulled the engine down to freshen it up, but ended up doing a full rebuild. Even then after around 450K, there was no need to gring the crank, it was still in good condition, no cracks and within factory specs.
You may get newer engines making more power, but the old 12HT will do me. It cost me $1100.00 for a full rebuild of the injector pump and injectors, $1050.00 for full rebuild of the turbo (that included a new exhaust housing as the original was cracked) $1200.00 in machining the block, and reconditioning the head and fitting new cam bearings. Rebuild kit cost me around $1100.00, new pistons and rings (new pistons have a steel insert in the top ring groove so the groove doesnt get hammered out like the original pistons) main bearings, big end bearings, conrod bushes, oil pump gears valve and spring, etc. I used original gaskets, cant remember how much the set was, but it doesnt come with a head gasket (good on ya mr toyota ) factory head gasket is around $200.00, but dont use anything else as it wont last!!
I assembled it all myself, and did a major overhall on the rest of the cruiser also, bigger surg calipers on the front, axle widening kit, discs on the rear, airbags on the back springs etc etc..... Will last me another 20 years
With my Beaudesert exhausts 3.5" dump pipe to 3" mandrel bent exhaust (yes i am running a muffler, albeit straight through) top mount intercooler and a tweek on the turbo, I think I will have a pretty reliable, powerful rig, that wont be scared of a bit of water... !!!

Bloody hell flyology all your rig needs now is diesel gas then that would be the perfect motor.
Would it be possible to see some pics of your cruiser all put back together ?

Will take a few tomorrow and try and post them, might have a day off, might have to go into work....
I still have few things to do to finish it off, new carpet, refit the exhaust from the diff back (had to move it to clear the airbags), on board air comp, dash and stereo back in (bought one on those all in one jobby things with a 7" screen so the missus can watch DVDs when we go on holidays to the NT.
I wont know what to do with myself when it is finished!!!

Ok, here are a few pictures of my 60, still have a week or so's work left to do on her.
Grille is from an import (came with new headlight surrounds when I bought it off ebay for $100.00 ) I got it as someone knocked off my Turbo badge and I couldn't get another one anywhere..... looks nice with all the chrome
Below is a picture of the bracket I made to support the handbrake cable/s, front is a slightly modified 45 series, rear is custom Subaru. Not sure what vehicle the half moon cable puller is from, got it from the local brake reco bloke...
Below picture shows the tight fit for the 3" exhaust to get past the shock, airbag, spring and 190 litre tank, but it can be done....

12HT:
My top mount i/c is using a patrol/hilux (they are near identical but mine is a patrol) bonnet scoop, with an aftermarket intercooler I bought off ebay. I plan to have it fitted in the next few months after I have sorted any bugs once I am back on the road.
If you need any help with the auto to 5 speed conversion give me a holler, I did mine about 4 years ago, best thing I did! Fuel economy improved heaps! (my missus refuses to drive an auto.. )
Sixty's Guy:
Long range tank is a 4WD systems (South Australia) I bought it about 18 months ago when I noticed they had a special on fuel tanks, was $695.00. It cost me $200.00 in freight to get it to Cairns, fitted it myself. Quite easy to fit, well made. Only thing I would have changed (but a bit hard to) was having more baffles inside of it, as when I pull up I can hear the fuel sloshing around inside. (I can only just hear it, when the stereo is off, and there is not noise at all, so not a big issue)
Wozza244:
Thanks for the comments, I use mine as a daily driver, to tow my boat, taking off on holidays, and up the cape every now and then. I went over the top a bit with cleaning and repainting everything (Diffs, springs, steering etc) to the point of I was supposed to have it finished September just passed to go on holidays to the NT, but ended up leaving a few days late and taking the Missus's CRV
Though I must say that it is so much easier to work on when it is clean, and to me it just feels wrong puting new parts on to old dirty greasy stuff.
Paint and finish is not that flash when you get close, not worth having a flash paint job just to have it knocked around. I just touch it up with acrylic when it needs it.
Will post all the details of boost and egt temps when i am back on the road...

yee flyology had a 60 12ht 5speed before with only 272000km was heaps more economical than auto.

Thanks heaps for that. I take it that the tank mounts to the body like the old one? So with a 2" body lift it would be 2" higher?

Yeah, bolts to the original mounts, but used brakets on the tanks for the front, and a separate bracket for the rear, rather than straps. Do you want some photos of the mounts also?
