painting a fiberglass canopy????

have found a canopy that might fit my ute,,only problem is it is blue and i need it to be bronze.......anyone able to tell me the correct way of painting it,,paint to use,,prep etc....normally i guess you'd just rub it down and use 2k,,,but this being a canopy with the little ridges/dimples i aint got no idea ....

Any one have any idea? mines unpainted and i want to make it red to match the body, Its on a 91 F truck from broken hill NSW so it has seen a bit of sun if that makes any difference to the prep?

To paint the textured finish.

You will next to clean the canopy down really well with Wax & Grease remover first. I would do it twice before you even start rubbing it down.

You will need some red scotch brite to rub it down with. It has to be rubbed really well particually around the windows rubbers, opening etc. Try not to rub though the orginal paint or gell coat though as this will cause all sorts of problems.

Remember paint wont stick to sealastic (silicone) which is usally all around the windows on them. So if theres any hanging out cut it off neatly with a razer blade before you rub it down.

Once it's all rubbed down then it needs another good clean with Wax & Grease remover before masking can be done. Clean all areas that need masking with Wax & grease remover as well. This helps the masking tape stick.

For masking you will need a tape called "Fine Line" tape in either 3mm or 6mm. It's a plastic tape not paper. This is designed for the fiddily bits and also much easier to remove then normal tape when the paint is dry. once you have went around everything with this tape first then you just mask up with 3/4 inch tape, 2 inch and paper as normal.

For painting I would recomend a 2 pack sealer first "like PPG's Scan sealer" which is a thansparent sealer which will help give the paint good adhesion to the canopy. Once this is tacked off "5 to 10 minutes" you can then paint over it in 2 pac paint.

All the stuff you need is available from any Automotive paints store. You wont find it at Super Cheap or anyone who knows how to use it.

Go to you local paint store and ask for some 2pac polyurithane paint. you will need to sand th eentire canopy back until the surface is dull. if there are any chips in the original paint you can bog them up with polyester body filler. once sanded wipe with wax and grease remover, and spray.
