Trannies

Post by Croz »

G'day all.

Anyone out there ever experienced it being hard to engage first/second at idle when the truck is hot? I have a feeling that my box is low on oil but havent had a chance to look yet. It only happens hot, and I notice it especially when I go 4x4ing. There is no noise just a stiff shifter.

Also, I get the whine in 4low, especially in third and fourth low when travelling between technical sections with a bit of pace, never really worried cos it sounds good!

Low oil level may have something to do with the shot below, you might have seen before, on this funny angle some oil dripped from the breather, I never got around to filling it back up.

Check your clutch adjustment. Sometimes when your clutch is out of adjustment or worn out it can be hard to select gears.
The low oil may have something to do with your noise but it wont have anything to do with the shifting until the box is empty & its about to seize!!!!!!!!!

If you need to top up the oil then drain it instead and use a thinner oil (especially if you are in a cold climate). This will help with the shifting but only do this after you have had someone look at the clutch adjustment.

Try these things and if they don't work let me know with some more information & I may be able to help.

Failing that, buy a Patrol, worked for me!!!!

I've got a similar problem but mine can be hard 2 get in even cold sometimes. Only happens every now and then.
I don't think it's the clutch because I've tried 2 see if it would slip but it won't. There is a bit of play in 3rd and 5th gear, especialy noticed it when towing a loaded trailer 2 fraser.
Any ideas.
Thanx

tranny probs

Post by JoJoELII »

Hi !

4 me no question, it could be the clutch adjustment which is responsible for shifting problems. But it isn´t always......

Here in Germany and in the close-by Netherlands ( a lot of Feroza drivers there!!!) the Feroza tranny has the reputation not to accept shifting into the 2nd gear properly. Especially, when it is cold.

I do have this prob with my ´92 ELII as well, of course.

I did change the oil of both trannies (at 125 tkm) to "Slick 50" gearlube, which contains PTFE (Teflon) particles. Since then, it shifts much easier and I feel, that there is a lot less rattling noise from underneath. Can also be imagination only....

So, try it out, if you like to

changed the oil in the trannie and transfer case today and the shite that came out of both was disconcerting, definitely needing a change.

Bit of a problem arose when I undid the transfer case filler and the whole thing, including the thread fell out after two turns of the spanner. I'll be puitting a call to the mechanic on monday for that one, either tap an oversize thread for a new plug or put in a helicoil... either way not very impressed with whoever put the plug in last time!

I've been thinking about trying this stuff: http://www.redlineoil.com.au/product-information.asp

Their shockproof oils are supposed to be very good and are thinner than normal gear oils but provide excellent protection. Only problem is the price- around $32 per litre! Althought the gearbox only holds 1.8 l from memory.

BTW I'm running a 50:50 mix of Castrol VMX80 and auto trans fluid (DexronII?) to help with cold shift problems on mine.
