35's rule!

Post by Lordtrunks »

Picked up some 35's be fore me last trip and man the clearance is wicked plus i don't drag my lift shackles like i used to with 31's and with the 2.85:1 t\case gearing there is no bog on the rocks. I didn't do a body lift so far i've just been beating out the places where the tires rub with a hammer i'm going to be doing some sawzalling on the fenders to rid the rest of the rub i have on the fender lip. I'll post some pics soon. Hey frank lloyd said running with the 5.29's the 35's felt like 31's so thats pretty cool i'm gonna be pulling my engine and putting a turbo in so with the turbo and i'll get some gears on road power won't be a problem.

sorry for not posting anypics i'll get some up me buddy's camera is a pile of junk all the pics we took from out last trip out with swartzy didn't come out or have some massive clouding action. I'll have to get out and take some more. The t\case is working out great man only problem with it i've had is all the seals for the drive shafts were wrong but i put the right ones on and all is ok. Rubbing really wasn't as much as expected even swartzy was amazed by it it only rubbs when flexed hard and turning up front it hits on the spot on the inside of the fender were it drops down like a bump and when turnint on the front peice of metal that comes down behind the bumper. In the rear it rubbs on the inner fender wall(mostly due to rim offset) and on the fender lip by the rear bumper only under full flex there. i'll be hammering and sawzalling all those spots to rid my self of the rub.

So, everyone is secretly hanging out with the hip Aussie crowd here, now? Just so everyone knows Patrick is insane and those 35s rub so badly you keep thinking he must be rolling his truck down the mountain behind you! And the 2:85s definately rock, from constant stalling and impassible trails with 33s, to no threat of stalling period with 35s! I have not tested the 5:29s much, but with the gearing combo 1st gear redlines before the speedo moves and 12mph is about max speed in OD!

Holy crap!!! I didn't expect it to be that much of a reduction when in low range. So at 60mph and 35's what revs are you doing swartzy?

Well his low range reduction has gone from 25:1 (auto, 4.625's) to 43:1. Plus he has got his highway power back with 35"s.
With say mine (4.88's and 5sp) it will go from 36:1 to 54:1 with 5.29's it would be 59:1. Their unheard of numbers in a Mitsi.
Unfortunately there was just no more room in the t/case to go lower without compromising strength/reliability. They are a very compact unit.
Even still it is proven to be an extremely worthwhile mod and is one of the Mitsi's weak points I wreckon. 36:1 with 33"s I find is way too fast for obstacles and thats when things start to break, the slower the better.

I have been think about trying to adapt another type of tcase to our transmissions. I think the gears you guys are cutting are awesome, and I may want a set.

But if you could mount a different tcase there would be more of a benifit.

I have to call around and see if any one shares this transmission. Honestly I know nothing about it. People claim the Jeep had this transmision in the Grands Cherokee. Some one else mentioned a toy product. Personally I dont even know the designation of the tranny.

But if you could fit a np 231 in there, you could run 4:1's, twin sticks, ect ect.

My issue with the mitsubishi case is that it is chain driven. With a genII LWB you have alot of driveshaft length in the rear. You could even stick two transfer cases together and have room. But you cant do that with the chain drive, not enough strength.

Frank do you know anything about this auto tranny?

Not sure, never drive that slow on our remote highways, speed limit is 75mph. At 80mph its about 3250 and 90mph 3500. With both 5:29s and 2:85 t/case low range is a 67% reduction, and thats big!
