the years have been good to me, its the weekends that have done all the damage!!!!!
i take it your talking about the shims behind the side gears ? dont stress,
remove the top so you can remove one side gear put metal strips (i used bolts) down between the spider gears weld them all up like one big molten mess , but becarefull not to weld the top of the spider gears lest you won't be able to reinstall the side gear and cover back on, if you do stuff up just grind down the side gear you removed and weld it onto the cover plate . becare ful not to get splatter all over your bearings ,unless your gunna change em , coat them in grease works fine. turn it over and hit the other side gear (not much room ) between the spider and gear and she'll be fine.
but DON'T just weld the spider gears to the centre as they will let go and possibly stuff your diff housing as it did mine , thats why i ALWAYS reinforce with metal strips down the sides.

oh i see just count the amount of turns you unscrew the adjusters and mark them so they go back excactly the same , or buy or borrow a dial indictor, its not just the backlash though its also your bearing preload , thats why you do what i said above
