Hi there, I have looked through both the sierra and vitara bible for info, but cant seem to find what I want, so I thought that I would ask you guys:
I took my Holden Drover (G13A, 5 speed) to a transmission specialist today to get an opinion on the state of my gearbox- it's making a loud grinding noise (that get's faster as you build up speed) in every gear except 4th. I am familiar with gearbox problems (I drive a Pajero ) but just wanted to get a second opinion. The guy said that it needed a "full rebuild plus more!" He explained that no only did it need bearings and gear clusters, but also new shafts as well and quoted me from $1200 to $1500, drive in drive out (which seems a tad expensive) and another place offered me a changeover recon gearbox (no transfer) for $695. If possible, I would like to get a taller 5th gear ratio for the box so instead of sitting around 3000rpm at 90kmh, I could maybe sit on 2700-2800rpm. Is this possible? What is the 5th gear ratio in this box? Does the Vitara box have a taller 5th gear or is it the same box in both models? Would it fit? Can anybody recommend a good value-for-money place in Melbourne or near melb that can rebuild my gearbox? I would really apprieciate any info possible. Thanks, Sam

Mate theyre bending you over a table at those prices. If you are mechanically inclined, they are reasonably easy to rebuild yourself, just buy a rebuild kit and go from there. Another option, is to put an ad in the wanted section for a 2nd hand box, or go to a wreckers and get one. Every zook owner i know has a spare one lying around.

Its easy to rebuild just take pictures, and it will take you a day.You can get your rebuild kit from locktup 4x4 .com.au. If i can rebuild one anyone can.

How do I know if the gearbox is NT or WT? All I know about my car is that it is a 1985 Holden Drover! In relation to NT and WT gearboxes, what is the difference? Are the transmissions the same in size and appearance?ofr57 wrote:as for taller gears the NT i think has a taller 5th then the WT but i think its only about 500rpm differance or something ... not a whole lot
if you want big changes you will have to get custom gears cut ... and i havnt heard of anyone doing this for a sierra
Lets just say that my gerarbox is WT, can I fit NT gears to the WT box?

Although I am at a loss as to why on earth you would want to rev under 3000rpm at 100kph as you would struggle to hold 100kph in a stock zook motor at those revs. If you really want less revs the easiest way would be fit bigger tyres...
