Best way to drive autos?
l picked up my rig yesterday with the reco auto and remembered how annoying it is to drive when you are stuck in a 90 km/h zone. lt just can't decide which gear it wants to be in. Now my question is : what driving styles do you do eg. drive it as a 3 speed (using the power button) until you get to 100 km/h, then putting it into overdrive? Or maybe just put it into drive and put up with it. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

If the TPS is set correctly then it shouldn't change up and down a lot and if they do then it is a simptom that maybe you have a problem with either TPS or wiring. If i was you I would just change gears when you want. Anyone who drives an auto propoerly will change gears them selves anyway. Think of it this way, the auto computer can only react to a stuation where as the driver can anticipate what is coming and act accordingly. It is more efficient to to act before the load changes than to let the computer react to it.

if you put you foot down more, it thinks you wanna go faster, so it will drop back a gear to let you accelerate. conversly, if you let some pressure off, it thinks your happy just to cruise so it will go up a gear and let the engine revs drop. practice is the best bet for driving autos. it sounds strange, and i didnt belive it before i had an auto, but you do have to teach yourself to drive again if you wanna get the best outa an auto box. its not just a point and shoot thing like many people think

A speed camera would have prevented that!
The driving school wants us to drive the auto's as if they are a manual , but I couldn't be bothered. I think they are far too serious.

The throttle position sensor has a huge amount to do with how Patrol auto works. It has the greatest effect on shift as it is basically the only input telling the computer what you want to do. So if that signal doesn't change then the auto should just do the same thing unless the speed changes.LPGQ4.2AUTO wrote:nzdarin, you are right about keeping constant pressure on the accelarator. lt does make a difference. This is also why a worn TPS makes the auto change all over the place as the computer will have very little idea as to what you want to do and if it is completely stuffed thent he signal could be all over the place making the computer think tht you are pumping the throttle.
A Patrol auto that is working correctly is very easy to drive. One that isn't is a complete dog and you will want to shoot it alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I spent all of last week thrashing the living shit out of my truck and the auto temp never went over 80*. Not bad when Rodney says the auto is good for 600hp and I'm running about 530hp.
