TB42 head Casting variations

I've just compared the original head from my 1990 tb42 patrol which has cracked and the replacement i have bought. They appear to be different...
the original head has a smooth cast finish on most surfaces while the replacement has ridges cast into a lot of the surfaces of the head especially under the valve gear. does this mean it is the later improved casting that is more resistant to cracking???

Prolly cast 10 years apart, could be new dies, change in alloy over the years.

yep, you're right about the tooling, it definitely came from different tooling, i'm just wondering if anyone has seen this crosshatched pattern before?
and on another note, the ports are shocking... the short side radius is more of a square corner rather than a radius.

pix would be helpful..... a squarish short turn is not necessarily bad... but I recon you've got a Chinese copy... since it's off, flow it and compare it to the old one.. you mite be able to fiddle with the new and improve it...
