Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set
the winch is worth alot to the right person the trouble is finding them
telstra and energex pay a lot of money to fit them for a reason they are powerfull and reliable
A pto winch will out pull an electric winch anyday and do it for longer at a higher speed
A mate of mine has a pto winch and it is awsome it pulls as fast as if he were in low1st and he has never busted a shear pin
if a bunch of guys go out wheeling and one of them has a pto and the others an electric and the people involved have experience
the pto is going to to be the first choice for winch recovery work.
Electric winches are an easy cheap option but to the detriment of duty cycle ,heat and reliablity(water ingress problems)
then there is the favorite comment "a pto will not work when you are stalled in a creek"
well every time my electric winch has been under water it would only work for a mater of metres before it stoped working this is with the engine running
I would end up having to get the hand winch out to finish the job
I now have a hydrualic winch and it will run all day under water with the engine running
if the truck is swamped stalled in a creek you use a hand winch to get you out with the battery terminal removed so you do no further damage to your trucks electrical system
you have a far better chance off drying everything out and getting it going again than if you have everything powered up run your battery flat dragging the truck closer to the edge with your electric only to have it stop still in the water (it has happened many times to me)
how many times have you heard of people go to use their elec winch only to find it doesnt work Due to faulty relay or corroded brush holder
mine used to do this and i even had compressed air into the motor.
if you are going to sell the PTO it will be worth a lot more if you sell the whole set up including the adaptor drive off the gearbox. landcruiser mart used to sell them for 1200 bucks I think thats abit steep because it is all about supply and demand and there are plenty of 60 series ones for the $200- $600 dollar mark if you had everything I would think $600 would be a fair price because it is off a fairly late model truck.
pto and hydrualic winches are not subject to these nagging failures they just keep on going time after time
if I were your mate i would go and buy a hand winch and leave the pto fitted that way he would have all situations covered (side winching, under water winching)and if you ever spend any time with him in the bush you would learn to love and respect his winch.
I think alot of the negitivity toward pto winches is through ingnorance and lack of exposure and fairy tails about shear pins
cheers

i got my pto for $450 and reckon that was a bargain.. came with winch+bracket/brace, squashed wire rope, shafts, cable actuator and box. I had to source keys, custom length shaft, brackets and some new cable and thats it..
first time it got used in anger was at levuka where it winched a mq and then a 60 up a very steep grade.. it was a dead pull as they were not assisting as not to shock load the winch.. got both up with no issues at all.. just took it slow (REAL SLOW!) in 1st gear..
haven't broke a shear pin yet (but carry spares) and have done a few more recoveries since. have since used it in 2nd and 3rd gears.. haven't tried to drive and winch yet.. its great having a winch with a gearbox.
had it for about 2-3yrs now and I've only just recently serviced it.. has been maintenance free since then, would of only wound the cable on nicely.. fixed some internal bolts that were loose and regreased the dog clutch.. pretty easy for a home mechanic.. cost was just time and some bolts i had layin around.
I would of paid up to about $600 depending on how complete it was (i ended up paying about that after brackets/wire/etc was bought).. so depending on the buyer you could get some good cash for it.

A toyota winch in Malaysia, where I am, is getting harder and harder to find at a reasonable price. They used to be cheap a few years back.
A toyo 2 sp winch now is around 1200A$ now. Thats used and usually the cable has to be replaced.
Some prefer electric winches, but at the end of the day the pto has distinct advantages.
