best material for rollbar?

Post by khany427 »

hey all, a mate of mine is going to build up a roll bar for me however i dont know what metal to have it done in?

its going to be 3in, usual hoop around the back of the cab and arms going back about halfway down the tray on each side (usual routine really)

i dont want it weighing a shitload yet i also want it to serve its purpose incase the old girl falls over.

also have to be able to buy the bends aswell coz no one hear can bend 3in.
my mate is a boilermaker by trade and has all the right gear to weld anything, mig and tig.
i was thinking aluminium but would look dodgy with the visible welds for the bends.

what do yas suggest??

i wouldnt go alley unless you want it to look good. If it was me id build it out of mild steel 2.5 - 3.0 thick would be plenty might dent in a roll over but would hold car up but wouldnt be too heavy either.

If youre talking about 3" tube and buying in bends don't bother asking on here what to make it out of it doesn't matter as it's a cosmetic item.

2" CDS/DOM miniumum Grade 350 if you want something useful.

Beg / borrow / steal a copy of the CAMS Manual. All the specs for motorsport rollcages are there - dimensions, materials etc.
