Looks as though it mounts to the body only. I'd be worried if I was hanging a larger than stock tyre + steel rim there.

Looks like a copy of the toyota factory mount offered in pretty much every market except australia. I think there is a good reason why it wan't offered here - toyota will have figured that in our conditions, the load on the body/door is excessive.

I've never confirmed this, but I reckon cars intended to have this would have reinforcing in the rear 3/4 to take the load in any case and it won't be present in our vehicles.

If you back into something or drop off a ledge and catch the tyre, you're going to be in for the worlds supply of panel work that will make the extra $$ for a chassis mounted rear bar seem cheap.

Just my 2C

As an aside, if anyone has a japanese market 80 with the spare tyre on the back, have they ever noticed any extra bracing inside the rear 3/4?

Looks the same setup as a lot of the import surfs.
The surfs with the factory carrier like this have backing plates inside the panel to spread the load but no real additional bracing in the panel.
Bloody IFS bugger who slows down the SAS boys.
