Toyota K series into Zook info needed
Toyota K series into Zook info needed
Hi Zook owners,
Just bout myself a '94 model LWB Sierra with the Mugati 1000cc motor.
I have bought it for a project I want to build, only really need the chassis but thats another Story.
Anyway, I'm also a K series corolla freak (currently have 3x {1x of which is a 100+rwkw turbo 5k! }), and I have a 7kc motor (1800cc) here that I want to put into the Sierra.
Considering how the K motor conversions seem pretty popular for Sierra's I was a little suprised that there isn't really any info about it on here.
I have been doing a lot of searching over the weekend, have read through the "Sierra Bible", and also this thread... http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic780 ... hlight=4kc
....but there is still not much helpful info.
Some people say its a "bolt in upgrade", which its obviously not! Others say you need to move the transfer case back!
Really need to dispell some myths and find out exactly what is required to be done. If anybody could post up some pictures of K's in sierra engine bays (specifically the engine mounts etc) that woud also be very handy.
Any help would be very much appreciated, need to get this motor in asap as the 1lt is soooo slow!
Cheers,
Si.

Yes you need to move the transfer back.
I don't think the K series is a good motor for a sierra, but a 7K does have it's appeal- even a 5K is quite torquey and a much better option than a 1.0 litre, but it's 2008 now, not 1983 and a iron, pushrod motor isn't really the way to go IMHO.
It's not an easy swap though. If I'm right, the maruti has the same engine mount locations as a 1.3, so I'd be putting a 1.6 in there for a easy, torquey solution. The K is harder to get into a 1.3 engine mount car than a (suzuki) 1.0 as the K series motor is is all over the engine mount.
The only reason K motors were used was because well back in the day they were cheap and available - pre 1.3 sierras and pre vitara motors.
Just my 2C.

Would the transfer case move be avoidable if you shortened the the little drive shaft right down?
So that the GB extened into the tunnel a bit further?
I understand and appreciate what you're saying about better engine options available now, but I have the motor, GB, Radiator etc - Everything I need to do the conversion here!!! And I really don't want to change my plans now.

That's with the driveshaft ALL the way down from memory.
Before the dawn of time, Grimbo had a 5K and 5speed in a LWB. The transfer went back a couple of inches from memory and I'm sure it had a really short jackshaft in it.
Steve.

yes for a proper job the t/case should come back.they are a shitty install, and look appauling. the maruti engine mounts are not located in 1.3 positions, they are as per 1litre jap.

What K motors look appauling!? I'm sure I can make it look pretty good when done! This is one of my corolla's engine bays ......

Joe, I think Steve is referring to my Maruti (talked about in "Stupid Maruti Q" thread), which I am 99% sure has 1.3 engine mount locations. To swap out my 1litre maruti F10A and put in my vitara 1.6, all I had to do was use a plate on the drivers side engine mount, the passengers side bolted straight up.

i tryed to speek to you 2 rounds ago at the drags... and you were a tool and wouldnt give me the time of the day..
a sweet rolla btw pitty about the owner..
on another note... the 4k is ok in a zook i have sceen a few done, but yep move transfer to make it work well...
its simple but they are such old motors, get something new.. 4age, g13b if you want power...

Dude, do you have any idea how many people came and gave me 20 questions about the corolla that day!? You where probably one of the last to ask and at that stage I was probably over it for the day. Either that or it was while I was trying to cook/eat my dinner.jonno_racing wrote:i tryed to speek to you 2 rounds ago at the drags... and you were a tool and wouldnt give me the time of the day..

My appologies, it's normally hard to stop me talking about my cars.

It will be ok, im sure he didn't mean to wreck your day...
We moved Trents back, but mine was ok just shorter. Sing out it u want a hand making the new shafts.

I had a 5k in my LWB. The jackshaft was basically two unis welded back to back. The engine was a pretty good fit and type . It was nice and torquey and had enough revability to make it useful. The only reason I put it in about 10 years ago was because it was a cheap option and the Vitara 1600 route hadn't really started to become a possibility.
Ransom note = demand + collage
i have i 4k in mine at the moment and the t/case was moved back about 80mm and the jack shaft has been shortened and the front drive shaft has been lengthened and rhe rear shaft has been shortened will get some pics for you soon

Have a 4K in mine too for now. It seems as though you have a thing going with the K motors which is cool but IMO the 4K is a waste of time in a sierra when with pretty much the same modifications (plus wiring and hydraulic clutch) you can have a 4AGE or GZE.
Don't get me wrong, my engine will hold high revs all day and eat it up but in terms of power and reliability, give me fuel injection every time. I could notice very little power difference between my 4K zook and my older 1L zook, whereas the 4AGE zook hammered.
Btw, my jackshaft is about 6" from memory, running the standard corolla rwd 5 speed. If anyone really cares I can measure for them.
Having said all that, I don't want you to think I am shitting on your build. Please do post up a build thread when you get going. I love seeing peoples takes on their perfect zook.

It can and has been done many times without moving the transfer, even in LJ's. In fact the first conversion kits supplied by Dellow and Zenith Engineering did not move the transfer back. An adapter flange is utilised and the tranfer is solid mounted to the gearbox, most early conversions were done this way, if done properly there is no disadvantage in not having a true remote transfer and jackshaft.
btw to fit a 1.3 or 1.6 ltr suzuki motor in a suzuki that came with a 1ltr maruti motor the engine mounts on the 1ltr have to be ground of as they sit lower on the chassie than the 1.3
the hydraulic clutch on the toyo box is a pain in the ass i have heard that bolting in the complete pedal assemble from a hiace van is an easier option

Thanx for the pics flyinwall. Just wondring, how much room do you have between the rad and engine fan? If I were to weld on new mounts is there much room to pull the engine forward?
504_matt - Can you elaborate a bit more? do you just mean a spline for the gearbox with a flange that just bolt straight onto the transfer? With no unis?

you could move the engine forward a little bit but not much
i didnt make the conversion as i got it from out of another zook from on this forum so i dont know how much further forward it has been moved but it looks like the engine mounts have been made out of some box steel and cut to shape

i had to cut that cause the uni was hitting the crossmember and i am going to weld a piece in across the bottom of the crossmember

Going to see if I can get my hands on a stock K cross member. Thinking I'll just cut the 1lt mounts off and weld the K ones onto the chassis rails.
Maybe also worth mentioning that I wasn't planning on running a normal K50 (5 speed)! I'm going to try and use a W50 with a liteace K-W bellhousing. Looking at how much room is around that K50 extension housing I think I might have a bit of trouble fitting the W50.
Thats a K40 (not a K50) on the left, and the W50 on the right. The rare-as-rocking-horse-shit K-T50 is in my turbo corolla.

a gypsy 1.3 chassis must have slipped through the factory in india . did 8 marutis in the past 4 years from 95 to 99 models and all had 1.0 litre mounts and i was using standard 1.3 come 1.6 engine mount bracketry and the mounts were not going to sit the way they should normaly.

Hi jaffa, firstly is your car really a maruti, not all LWB suzuki's are maruti's, did you get it with a 1 litre engine in it or a 1300, secondly did you actually fit the engine yourself or have someone do it.
I agree with joeblow, all maruti's come with 1 litre engines and therefore have 1 litre mounts on the chassis which differ from 1300 and 1600's. All that I have seen with 1300's or 1600's have had the mounts on the chassis altered to suit.
