moving an fj 60 shell with no diffs?

Post by richardsc »

i just bought an fj 60 minus all running gear for a project im about to start, its got no diffs or suspension, how do i get it on a trailor with out damaging shell or spring mounts, its getting the suspension and diff off my hj60 with fubarred body and having a 302 bolted in,my neighbour has a car trailor, but its like mesh steel and im concerned dragging shell onto trailor will do damage to spring mounts

any ideas? how would others do this

find a dodgy old set of springs/axles/rims? Wouldn't even need to be bolted in properly...

well i only paid 150 for it,hence why i bought it,its alot straighter than my siezed hj 60,has the full fuel system and gas set up,plus im picking up a 302 and complete conversion kit including 5 speed and transfer tommorrow as im over diesels, lol,if i damaged the spring hangers dragging it on a car trailor,is it hard to swap over spring hangers,eg off my hj 60,the shell is sitting up in the air on stumps, maybe i should get off my butt and remove the diffs off the hj 60 onto the shell but yeah, time

plan is to extra cab ute chop it,but with a style side look, not tray it,and maybe bob it down the track, the hj 60,s roof rust has gone into the frame beyond the roof,so a new shell was decided apon

weld on some skid plates to the spring mounts then. cut them off when its in the place it will sit

if you dont have a welder bolt a bit of 3x2 with beveled edges to the spring mounts and drag it.

or go visit your local wrecking yard and see if they will lend you a car trolley at the wreckers i used to work at we have this massive 2mx2m trolley that we could fit a entire car on and push it around

you will need a trailer with a flat ramp tho not just bars or it wont work

Try some old ply or wood, put a bit of old oil on it and it should slide on ok. Just make sure it is thick enough.

lol@skateboards,i remember moving a slate pool table top on one of those from the shed to the bungalow, the cars just around the corner from me,not even 2 kms away,i might ask him if he can wait a bit so i can pull my diffs and bolt em on to the new shell, its gotta be done anyways, and hes on land so may be fine with that, seems my only option really, unless i can get a pair of diffs and springs cheap,i have heaps of wheels, hmmmmm, whats a crappy set of diffs wirh springs worth, might suss ebay

trolley jack it up and put piano dolly's under each corner, then hopefully get it onto car trailer with a winch.
At first I thought it was a sea anemone, upon closer inspection I realised it was a funky ball of tits from outer space.

Well if this is the case... not really too hard to do. May not be the safest way, but if your careful enough, you should be OK.

Get 2 lengths of RHS or the like that is wider than the car trailer and will support the shell...
1. two hi-lift jacks on each end of chassis rail at the front and take the weight off the stumps.(Lifting in tandem)

2. Move to front supports(stumps) to desired width so as the trailer is able to be reversed inbetween them and under the shell. if he's on property, I'm sure theres some bigger stumps to be found as supports to sit it on, or just move the ones there and pack em up to just above trailer height

3. Place the RHS or similar across the supports to sit the shell on.

4. Lower the front onto the RHS crossmember.

5. Do steps 1-4 the same for the rear.

6. Carefully reverse, being guided under the shell.

7. Using two hi-lifts again, in tandem... lift the shell until the RHS is just loose enough to remove and lower the hi-lifts in tandem so the shell sits onto the trailer.

8. Do the same for the rear.

Note: THIS IS NOT THE BEST NOR SAFEST WAY TO DO THIS, BUT I HAVE USED IT A FEW TIMES WITHOUT A PROBLEM. YOU WILL NEED TO BE 'VERY' CAREFULL WHEN DOING THIS!!!! DO NOT LIFT THE WHOLE CAR AT ONCE WITH HI-LIFTS, IT WILL BE REDICULOUSLY UNSTABLE AND FALL!!!(just incase you needed to know!! ;) )
When in doubt..... UTE-ERIZE it!!!

You wouldn't need the diffs, all you would need is springs... They should slide pretty easy (using a winch or something to pull it).

Good luck.

i like the spring idea, ill call the wreckers tomoz and suss there prices,i was thinking tow truck, but cost scares me,plus they may not like the idea of dragging a shell on there tray, they prefer rolling, plus with 5 landcruisers strewn around our property,my old girls reaction to a shell joining the family could get embarrasing with a tow truck driver there, pmsl, main thing is i bought the 302 and complete conversion kit last week, plus have to do a late xmas shop with this pay so have to be a scrouge with picking up shell,so leafsprings from the wreckers is right up my alley for a try

hilux mad,i still need to get an engine hoist to get my 302 with 5 speed and transfercase of the trailor, lol

i didnt think an engine hoist would have the height to lift a cruiser shell off the ground, even just to reach over the roof??????????????? do u mean block and tackle

i still havnt picked up my shell,i got a 1 ton block and tackle, but not sure thats heavy duty enough to lift a 60 series minus its running gear and diffs ect,so still think cheap leaf springs from the wreckers

just get a few logs and roll it on them. As it moves grab the one that comes out the back and feed it back in the front. To easy.
