computer chip 4 v8 disco
Anyone with info on computer chip for 3.9 v8 disco. I have recently done dual fuel conversion, while on gas general driving is ok but towing is another story, I knew i'd lose power but it seems like tha auto is doin all the work. I would like to know what sort of power increases are available with the computer chips. Dont want to replace the computer just a plug in chip. Where can i get one from i'm in NSW, and if anyone knows a roundabout price. Thanx fallas.
The ECU in a Disco1 only controls fuel (being petrol). So chipping the factory ECU will only give benefits on petrol.
My Disco1 had a a remapped fuel chip in it when I bought it. Invoice said it cost $700 from John Davis which included a new vacuum advance thingo and dyno tune. That was in about 2003.
The $1400 quote was probably for a Unichip or similar which you can get to do dual maps. It will make a big difference on petrol so I've read but it will also give you an LPG ignition map.
Other choice is to replace the entire ECU setup with an aftermarket unit like a Wolf or something.
The 3.9 V8 was never a powerhouse anyway 130kw or so.
Where will you get a new ECU bought, installed and properly tuned for less than $1400?

Reply'n to utemad, my disco has standard computer. Havent changed since getting gas fitted. If it only controls petrol how am i able to drive it on gas? If the standard computer can control both petrol and gas mapping now as standard, why can it not if a plug in chip is installed? Maybe i dunno what i'm talkn about, it just seems to me that if it works now it should do after. As for getting things cheap i can get wholesale prices on heaps of things. Thanx for ya info champ. Happy double diffn. P.s do you know how to higlight a post that will be displayed when responding to another post, so i dont have to say responding to .....? The one with the ring in the intake hose or the one with its own injectors?
If it is the first one then there is no computer required for the LPG. It is like a carby setup (this is what I have). This is the most common setup in Australia.
If it is the second one then it has its own computer. This is getting more common in Oz but is expensive in comparison.

To answer the question, I have a "Unichip" fitted to a D1 and are very happy with it.
It turned the vehicle from a slug into a powerhouse
The Unichip fits onto the original ECU and controls the fuel and spark.
The guts of the distributor is replaced with a unit that the Unischip can control.
I recently completed a 4,000km trip, towing a caravan and the change was amazing. The increased torque is fantastic and the fuel consumption, improved.
On the highway, on it's own cruising at 110 returns 14 l per 100km, 120 15l per 100km. The biggest difference, is flatten the foot and you can overtake very quickly.
Around town it is doing 18 to 20l per 100km.
The system comes with dual maps, so LPG can be a bonus.
Yes, it did cost a lot of money, $1,400, but I think it was money well spent.
I even have a speeding ticket to prove it!!

The pick up from 100kph is unbelievable compared to standard form.

It also holds it's own at the stop lights!
I have surprised a few who have darted into the left lane, positive that they can beat the POS on the right, before the left lane ends.. WRONG !

your disco is running on gas using the fuel map for petrol which is not always optimum for lpg - hence having a Unichip with dual maps it switches between the two giving optimum tune for each - like having your cake and eating it too!
the problem i have experienced with my unichip (bought the car with it) is that it can mask faults such as dirty/clogged injectors, leaking intake system (un-metered air) which means the tuner will add fuel on the dyno tune so it doesn't lean out all the time... anyway, get one is my advice

even when you spell out commonsense to the RTA they still ignore it!
Murray Sanderson was telling me that running on premium fuel is not always a good idea, unless you have had your fuel tank cleaned.
The PULP cleans the tank and the filter is between the tank and the engine.
Therefore the "gunk" gets sucked into the fuel pump ans "she stops".
If this ever happens to you, sometimes "Kicking the fuel tank" will get the pump working again, so I'm told.

Slipping it into neutral helps and cleaning the stepper motor fixes it for a while.
Got my car back tonight!
It now drives like it always should have. Not radical power it just cruises around...but has heaps in reserve for when you need it and if you wake it up a bit it pulls hard. Hard to tell the benefits in some ways till you get off road but -all good so far.
Haven't done the exhaust yet and a few other tweaks to go but already getting well over 100kW on the dyno....not bad for a 3rd hand engine bought for $3k- cheers Cranky
