toyota 1.8 liter as engine swap for feroza/US Rocky?

toyota 1.8 liter as engine swap for feroza/US Rocky?
Has anyone heard of using a 1.8 liter engine from toyota that has the same bolt pattern? I have heard rumors here in the US, but no specifics.
Have spent a lot of time researching this through formal and informal channels.
I have not been able to find a single motor that bolts to the Feroza manual gearbox - so IMO its completely false.
Auto Feroza's are a different story - i'm auto so..... stay tuned.
Replacement of the complete motor and transmission is of course a possibility but this means that you have lots of options, but also lots of work.

Where did that come from..... ?
Whilst toyota was a major shareholder in Daihatsu and some Diahatu's wer built on Toyota production lines, and some Toyota engines were used directly in some Daihatsu's - I'v never seen any facts to suggest the "H" series is anything but a Daihatsu design.
Can you provide a source ?

Sorry no, only by words, but friend and i were rebuilded a toyota MR2 with 4AGE engine. water pump is the same (catalog number is different, the price is different). We put daihatsu's water pump on toyota engine. lower part of engine is the same, what is different is head - that is more like detomaso engine.

nebivedu - this would be the best kept secret in the world if this was true - There you go MM - you could have just put a 4AGZE head & charger on your stock bottom end

A standard feroza block won't bolt to a standard feroza gearbox?nebivedu wrote:It wont fit to gearbox.Gwagensteve wrote:nebivedu - this would be the best kept secret in the world if this was true - There you go MM - you could have just put a 4AGZE head & charger on your stock bottom end

nebivedu, it was (sort of) a joke. If the feroza motor was, in fact, a 4AG motor with Daihatsu trim, then it might be possible to bolt the cylinder head only from the supercharged toyota 4AGZE engine onto the block of the feroza. There would be no effect on the gearbox as the engine block would still be the same.
Mightymouse has put togther more feroza engine combinations than I have had hot dinners trying to chase power. I was joking that he could have prevented all the hassle if your rumor was true.

This is true.. unfortunately a significant number of the combinations also dissambled themselves on the dyno....... even if the heads were interchangable, it was rods/crank and block that were the weak points so it would be an improvement - but perhaps not great enough to make the "H" series worth the effort.Gwagensteve wrote:Mightymouse has put togther more feroza engine combinations than I have had hot dinners trying to chase power. I've given up on Daihatsu engines..... there are more prommising alternatives to play with.
And...... putting any more powerfully motor on a Feroza manual is asking for trouble IMO. they fail frequently with the three squirrels pushing them - real power is just asking for it. Actually the whole power train isn't capable of transmitting much more than stock power. I've engineered mine for around 150kW but there's precious little Daihatsu left ( the housing from the front diff but not its internals, now that I think about it.... )

Yes, but it has twice the torque and that's what is going to break things.nebivedu wrote:I rebuild a range rover 3.5L V8. It has only 130PS (year 1979), that means only 30ps more than stock feroza.

Mazda BPD / Miata A44DE Auto / Vitara Transfer / HiAce-Hilux rear diff.
Its a very.............."custom" fit, and I would suggest that for any sane person its not do-able, but apparently I like a challenge.......
Started at the rear axle and worked forward - motor was chosen after giving up on Daihatsu.....
IMO starting at the motor doesn't make a lot of sense - yes its a problem but if you start there then everything else is going to fail if you have any real torque. Doing it the other way means the drivetrain is well and truly up to it. Its a bit less immediate but broken transmissions aren't any fun.
Was all "designed" to safely withstand around 150kW at the flywheel.
Only real unknowns are the front locker and outer CV's - The locker is MUCH stronger than stock but its also yet to be fitted so..... Front outboard CV's might not be happy but will have to see - have Birfield rings just in case.

F300 - 128Nm / 94PS
RR 3.5 V8 160 hp (DIN) (118 kW) @ 5200 rpm and 210 ft·lbf (285 N·m) of torque @ 2600 rpm on 10.5:1 compression.
It is old RR engine (Y.1979) with carburator.

Good luck with that. Great motor for the car, but the gearbox, transfer and diffs aren't going to like it.

rear diff wont be an issue. front diff, not so sure. cv's for sure wont take the abuse. tranny'll eat it asap. doubt the driveline can handle it either.
