advice on pinion nut!

Post by get it up there »

Hey peoples.. i recently got a locker installed into my front diff (lux diff, under a zook).. but now the bloody pinion seal is leaking. My qtn is, how do i get it undone?!?!?! It is soooo bloody tight.. all im doing is bending my tools!! (dont mean that in a filthy way either!!) I havent got oxy.. so would like to try other avenues before hassling someone for 10 seconds of oxy heat!! Does anyone know of any little tricks?? Thanks!

A 1/2" rattlegun with shop air should get the nut off easy. Even using a home compressor should give it enough squirt to get nut off. The nut may be loctited on maybe.

Don't forget about the little locking tab that you have to fold over when you put it on, make sure you fold it back out.

yup.. got the tab back. thanks anyway! The main prob is stopping the flange from turning while trying to undo the nut. This is how i've been busting/bending some of my tools! I may have to make up something out of steel, to try and brace it. Just thought i would see what other ideas people had. Tar heaps :)

Lock the hubs in and have the front wheels on the ground, and use a rattle gun, shouldn't spin then?

last time i had one stuck on a borg warner 8-3/4" in an escort i just cut two lengths of heavy angle iron longest one about 600mm long, and then grab a couple of heavy bolts and nuts, drill holes in angle and sandwich the pinion yoke. prop all this against the ground, and then get your 1/2inch breaker bar on the other side and whack your troley jack under it. jack away, and pop! get the 1/2 inch breaker from supercheap (supercheap gold brand) they have a lifetime warranty against breakage and are $27. if you bust it, take it in for a new one.

We had to do a 9" a while back, took a ¾" rattle gun and shop air to free it up - split 2 regular sockets and destroyed my breaker bar prior to this...

3/4 rattle gun will get it, if not it will destroy the nut and possibly pinion.
