1HZ glow system problems - need help please.

Hi Guys, I have a 2004 HZJ79 ute here in canada, it is fricing cold here now and it is starting very badly now.

I tested the glow plugs, they are new and fine, I disconnected the water temp sensor and checked voltage to the glow plugs, I got 11.09 volts at start and it climbed over 12 volts and then shut off all votage after 9 seconds, then instantly the volts come back up to 12V for about 3 seconds then shuts off - then no more voltage to the glow plugs.

So, I bought a new glow plug relay and preheat timer and installed them - still no difference. I see in the engine manual that there is a glow resistor to check - but mine doesnt have a resistor that I can find anywhere - looks like there is a place in the intake man. where it can screw in but never looks like there was one in this.

It used to start great on the coldest days of minus 30, now it is just bad.

What am I missing? There is nothing else new to buy that I know of.

Can someone please check their 2004 HZJ79 and see if you have a glow resistor in the intake manifold.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is to the point that it is even hard to start after it is plugged in.

How did you test the glow plugs ??
The only way to really test them is to remove the bar that connects them all and get a multimeter and set it to "ohms" usually 200 and test the resistance in the glow plugs. Place one prong on the threaded part and the other to the side body of the plug (earth). A dud one will show really quick and if its in the front of the line the plugs behind it usually wont perform and it wont start.
Once you have tested the plugs individually see if you have a fuel heater in your line some models do. If so check it.
diesel in extreme cold doesnt freeze but it does go through a sort of crystalite change that makes the stuff near impossible to start with. Thats why we have alpine diesel. I had mine do it once where the plugs were all good was freezing all night out camping and no amount of glowing would start it. I boiled the billy and slowly poured hot water over the injectors and lines and it then started first go.

I did test them wrong - will do it tomorrow. Would a bad plug cause the timer to screw up? According to the manual the timer should glow the plugs for about 14 seconds with the water temp plug disconnected - then volts should drop and stay powered for a couple of minutes. Mine isnt doing that.

Dont mess with it...buy 6 new plugs. If you find 2 gone, and replace them, another 2 will go in a month...so do it all at once and you wont get stranded...oh yeah...if u do nothing, all 6will blow and you will be stranded.

im with the above post, dont waste money or your time, test them, and if one is gone, ditch the rest, n get new ones.
