Can any one identify this diff???

Post by Yarno »

I have this diff in my Hilux which I have just bought, and have no idea what the rear diff is from. I was originally thinking GQ Patrol but have had a look at one and it seem different, plus it dosn't have LSD in it!!!
Here are a couple of pics.

coils, disc brakes,

i would be guessing its not a hilux diff, i could be wrong, it has what seem to be shock brakets on the rear of it, and hilux have one infron, and one behind, could it be a diff out of a 40, 60, 70 series cruiser, somewhere round there.

Its not a 9" its also not Toyota. It looks to me to be Nissan of some sort. Maybe Pathfinder? The way the axles bolt in says its nissan. But the centre is not a GQ one. It has a lot of other odd brackets that have been added so it makes it a little harder unless you own exactly what it is.

It has handbrake cables going to the back, I thought all (I think) Nissan's used a drum on the rear drive shaft?

Could is be a Mazda? Bravo or even Ford Courior?

You are all making a leap of faith that it is from a 4WD.............

Could it be from a Nissan 260 C or Toyota Crown (redrilled wheelstuds to match front), or another light commercial (van, light truck)?

Not necessarily, before 1976, there was a lot of semi floating cruiser rear diffs out there.

Still 30 spline, just offset and semi float, like a bundera.

nope. It may be nissan, but it aint from a GQ. Could be a Navara/Pathfinder H233.

Im with ruff, that is no 9inch!

The weird double panhard bracket leaves me confused. The 90 series/prado rear diff, has the drain bung on the opposite side, only a single panhard bracket, and different webbing, it is a strange one, that is for sure.

Definitely no toyota 4x4 I have ever seen. My bet would see it as Japanese. Factory coils, but they don't normally leave two mounts on like the poms, unless ones of them is home made. Factory LSD by the looks of that sticker, and 6 stud, could be anything mainly i would guess a newer pajero, or something possibly, rear disc, LSD, dropout centre, coils.

i think those things are meant to be shock mounts maybe? home-made looking..
there is some weird link mounts, or chopped off radius arm mounts in the front of it that are factory looking?

To me it screams Nissan 4WD cos of the disk rears, single pot caliper behind the axle. Factory lower arm mounts are in the right spot. The pumpkin & 3rd member looks Jap. The upper mounts have all been removed with the custom 4-link brakets welded on.

Semi floater with the hub identical to GQ hubs.

Can't see the old Panhard mount but that could have been cut off when the mods were done.

The shock mounts have been modified.

I'd say early GQ.

Well... what is it???

the brake plumbing is wrong fora GQ, they always join the flex to the hard line on a tag on the axle itself. the hub aint quite identical to GQ, slightly different, which is what made me think Navara 31 spliner.. But the carrier looks way too short to take a 9.25" ring gear.
