noisy transfer gears

recently rebuilt the t/case in the sierra and it is really noisy. the noise is only really bad when under power at speeds and is really bad above 80km/h. to the point where it is heard over the stereo and the noise of the extermes.

Any thoughts what could be making such a loud whine and tips on how to fix.

was it shimmed as per the zook workshop manual?
lwb 1.6efi,4sp auto,f&r airlockers,dual t/cases.custom coils.builder of ROAD LEGAL custom suzukis...and other stuff.

mine did that...
then i added oil...

check the oil!! i felt like a tool when i did it!

the entire case was given to a gearbox rebuilding shop with the relivant section of the manual. and it came back just as noisy. Ive since swapped the gears into a different case as i fount the input shaft bearing was loose in its housing. new case is better but everything is still noisy..

And yes It has oil.

Bad bearing, :?: mine was noisy till i put new bearings in it.

Hi B4T.

I assume that ALL new bearings were used in the rebuild? (Was the Front Output needle bearing, and the 2 main needle bearings replaced too?)

are you able to buy shims at repco maybe supercheap?

do you need a press to press the bearings off?

I got all my bearings on/off with a gear puller and a few sizes of pipe and hammer.

thanks. a nothing thing i might add. is the tcase shifter supost to be able to pull out? how do i explain it. like there nothing holding it in there only the rubber boot?

no, there's a locking ring you have to push down and turn anticlockwise to release the lever.

Sounds like yours has come undone.

Stock shifter on the right, evil twin shifter on the left with locking ring over it. Stock shifter works with a shifter bush (mine was gonesky), the evil twin doesn't. The locking ring pushes down and turns clockwise to lock onto the two pins inside the the cases shifter surround.

its like a diff, if there is noise than they are more than likely not running with an optimum pattern which could lead to early gear wear and maybe failure.
