1.3 sohc for sierra from swift

Post by Tooheys »

Im looking to get a replacement engine for my 85 1.3l sierra but in christchurch I can only find a 1.3 sohc swift engine.

I had a look in the bible and all the engine conversions relate to vitara, baleno and dohc swifts. In some of those threads it talks about changing the cam on the east west engines for the dizzy and also fitting a pulley for engine fan.

Is this what I can expect to have to swap to fit this engine (if it fits at all).

Cheers,

Paul

Some Swifts have the correct cam for the Sierra dizzy.
With a bit of luck, yours may be so.

If you fit your Sierra water pump, you can refit the Sierra fan.

I chose to stay Swift water pump, so I could have multi V belts, for falcon alternator and Vitara Power Steering.

Sump change and oil pick up change is easy
Don't forget to drain oil before removing sump

I think this sounds like the go as I would like ps if I can track down a jimny box which I believe are easier to come by in NZ. Did you opt for a thermo fan then? something like an AU falcon or similar?

Also what are the carbs like on these engines? Are they better then the sierra's or the same?

Lastly with the cam is it a relatively simple swap if I have to?

Thanks,

Paul

I got an adaptor made by a good mate in our club,
so I am using a stock sierra fan.

The carby on one of my previous engines was a huge monster, nothing like the Sierra.
I have been using my stock carby on all motors, as I rebuilt it ages ago, and is still good.
I am told some swifts do have useable carbys, but I don't know this myself.

Swapping cam was a pain, but I did it with very basic tools.
The screws holding cam in place can be hard do undo without rounding them off.
They can rattle loose, so lock tight them is wise.
Can't remember exact details, it was a while ago, sorry.

from the brief conversation I had with the wrecker it sounds like he has a couple of these motors. Is there an external difference on the dizzy so I know if it has the right cam? I'm guessing the angle of the dizzy will be the same as the sierra.

Cheers,

Paul

the swifts from 84-89 came with the correct cam , its has an angle drive on the end of the cam . the swift from 89 onwards used a camshaft with a slot in the end of the cam . generally the swift motor which is marked G13A will have the correct camshaft for sierra , the 89 onwards will be a G13BA .

if the cam has to be changed , an impact driver will make short work of the screws that hold the rocker shafts in.
