V8 landie

Post by nzfordboy »

hi well have finally decided on my 4wd i'm buying a 1975 series 3 landrover short wheelbase running a 253. now as far as i know it still has the normal landie drivetrain (does come with spare axles and diffs) now the current owner doesn't know if the diff is a sailsbury (spelling??) or not or if the spare rear diff is. how do i find out ?? if neither turn out to be one i'll buy one no problem there but would love to save some coin where possible...lol

cheers steve

Salisbury has a cover plate that bolts over the rear to provide access the diff internals.

The alternative rover diff is removed as a complete unit (3rd member) from the front of the diff/axle housing.

also the sals is about 1.5 times bigger than the rover type that would come stock front and rear in a swb. it has a longer pinion and the pinion is lower than center.

sals have been fitted to swb but im not sure they are ideal....strong yes, but they present other problems

If your rear diff pumpkin looks the same as your front, then the rear is a rover. If it looks beefy compared to the front and the axle tubes are joined on differently then its a Salisbury.

Salisbury: Note axle housing construction, bolts seen from the rear..

Rover: Note axle construction, bolts at the front.

a bit less ground clearence (solved by shaving it) and the spring pads have to be moved in a little. Its worth the upgrade steve.

Might be time to change your login on ore ;)

propshaft angles anrt great either, unsprung weight goes up....gound clearence goes down....yes you can shave but to shave anywhere near a rover housing clearence you would need to be able to weld to the cast steel housing and probably shave the ring gear....
