gq front shaft spinning when hubs unlocked & in 2wd

i have done a search and could not find any info yesterday my truck started to get a bad vibration and on closer inspection found that the front tail shaft is spinning when the hubs are unlocked and in 2wd i wanted to know what would cause this and how to fix

Its strange for a GQ gearbox/tc to go...

I can't help much on this one, hopefully one of the others can.

If its not a daily runner, drop the boxes and have them checked out.

Is the green 4x4 light coming on at all?

yeah it comes on when in 4wd and goes out 2wd but still spins its got me puzzled it started all of a sudden

And how does the T/C gear stick feel?

Can you feel it click in/out of 4x4, low, high etc?

I just thought of something....

Check to make sure both your front hubs are unlocked.

You would hate for some kid to have walked past and clicked one/both over to locked.

This also WILL make the shaft spin.

t/c stick feels good and all the way unlocked but it is quite tight hubs are definitely unlocked checked 3 times

See if you can spin the front tailshaft by hand.

the tail shaft spins i think the t/c is the problem would an oil change fix the problem only reason i noticed was because one of the unis is shagged and was vibrating

the oil may need replacing
but this is quite common and is why the later models went to atf fluid in the transfer instead of oil

Changed oil (ATF) and problem solved

If it has been running gear oil, i would stick to that and try to find the real cause of the problem (remember it was ok before it stuffed up). My guess is the problem is in one the front hub bushes and or a wheel bearing.

im planning on pulling thee hubs off in the next couple of days i have a feeling it might be one of the free wheeling hubs not unlocking properly

before u pull them off, make sure the shaft spins by hand, then lock 1 hub in, check if the shaft spins. If so, lock the other one in, then shaft should lock. repeat it, starting with the opposite side. If a hub is faulty, the shaft will lock with only 1 hub locked in. the "free" hub is then the problem

it will be a retraction fault in the locking hubs for sure.

They get all gummed up and dont retract the hub gear, ive seen it many times b4.

When u rebuild it dont use HTB grease as its too sticky, just use lipex (the blue stuff)

Oh and a quick word to all the people who replied b4 me, its good to give advise to help someone but when your advise is to take out the gearbox/transfer first... you should keep that to yourself...

Start small and work your way up...

I have used high temp bearing gease or graphite grease in hubs for years without drama's, the broblem most get is too much grease and hydraulic locking the hub. If it has auto hubs its common for them to play up. AVM hus are spring loaded and could be a problem with the sticky grease but but nissan manual hubs are normally ok.

Always think small and work your way in. If its been fine for years then its usually a simple fix. When you can isolate various components easily always do it first and 90% of the time its a simple solution.

it was a hub pulled it off and cleaned it all fixed now cheers
