As for free spools theres only 3 I know of and there all victorian (well sorta).
THere Flammin Fab, SG Leslie & Son and Gigglepin (Wayne Smith in Aust). All seem pretty reliable. Just need to give the rope a quick tug to make sure its locked in before hitting the button.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
Re: AIR FREE SPOOL
Not with all of them. Im pretty sure it's one of Mal Leslie's that I've used and never had to pull on the rope to lock it in.turps wrote:Just need to give the rope a quick tug to make sure its locked in before hitting the button
Its not a bundy!
You only need 2 air rams and some brackets and you can make them yorself.
You need one ram on the free spool pin, it needs to be pulled in/out. Then you need another one on the brake rachet as it needs to be pulled out of the way.
Have a few mates that did this about 10 years ago and they are still working perfectly today.

That will work but winch comp guys disconnect the drum from the gearbox (lot less drag) most guys are making there own custom ones these daysGuts wrote:You only need 2 air rams and some brackets and you can make them yorself.

I have the complete Gigglepin Winch in Queensland with me at the moment if you want to have a look, give me a call. I'll be in the Brisbane area untill the 3rd Jan.
It has a factory feespool setup, with 75mm wider drum and roller bearing everything.

Most free spools disconnect the drum completly from the gearbox, this is why everyone puts rods on the back to make the end plate and gearbox straight to stop the drum binding up when disconected from the gearbox.cloughy wrote:Yea nothing to do with turning the gears, back through the case, reverse to the gear reductionGuts wrote:The biggest drag is from the winch having twisited, tie rods help fix this.
A few free spools don't like the plates being out of square to each other for the free spool to work correctly.
I'm well aware, considering I have a free spooled drum on my 8274Modified Toy wrote:Most free spools disconnect the drum completly from the gearbox, this is why everyone puts rods on the back to make the end plate and gearbox straight to stop the drum binding up when disconected from the gearbox.cloughy wrote:Yea nothing to do with turning the gears, back through the case, reverse to the gear reductionGuts wrote:The biggest drag is from the winch having twisited, tie rods help fix this.
