Broke My Locker- Being Silly in 2WD. Need a diagnosis/Advice
Broke My Locker- Being Silly in 2WD. Need a diagnosis/Advice
Dont a bit of searching on the whole diff rebuild and been reading up, thought maybe I could ask the general Suz publics advice
So anyway I was being silly the other day in 2WD and trying to get up this smallish muddy ledge and half way up I got stuck but was still spinning tires, when I heard the usual locker "click Bang" as it does in carparks and tight corners, followed by that wheel of fortune sound when old mate spins the wheel click click click.... Or what you get when you jack the back of your car up and spin one wheel it makes that clicking noise. So I let of and reversed back down and drove up again but this time didn't get as far as only one wheel was spinning. So I put it in 4WD and drove up it and around the corner to some sand put in back in 2WD and started driving and my worse fear had come true going back to a One wheeler.....
I took it easy and drove home, no real problems on the way home the clicking and banging was far more frequent on corners and also happening in gear changes which rarely happens. Any how pulled the diff out, oh yeah axles aren't broken either, I still had clean almost golden diff oil mud and water free. Played around with the diff as in spun it around a few times looked for broken teeth or metal shavings but nothing. As a part of this I have also only recently had a bearing kit and what not put through it 6months back, so no issues in bearing play either. So I haven't pulled it down any further.
So my question is, being that I could still drive home with out any weird noises or grinding, does this suggest that I may have only broken a pin or spring/s in the Lockright (See process 35 in this link - http://www.kenbeach.com/sammy_lock_right_install.htm ) ...? Im still not totally sure in how these parts affect the process of how the Lockright works..?
Here are some pics but don't know if they will help anyone but hey everyone likes pictures
This pic was just after it happened I even stuck my head out the window to see if the whole rear had come off...

that would be my guess,
if your confident, pull the diff apart, and have a look inside, its like a $20 fix if it is only the pins

did you find any metal in your oil?
i just dropped mine cos the lockright was being a dog when onroad.. still locked but wouldnt unlock. tons of metal shavings :S about to pull the third member out and have a look. anyone know if thats normal to have metal shavings after a lockright install?
btw - i have spare springs here if you need them in the long run mate.
cheers

My Detroit auto locker did the same kinda thing. I dunno why but a pin managed to fall out of where it belonged in the locker and ended up giving my 1wheel drive at the back. I got new heavier duty springs for the pins and it was all good after that and found it to engage and disengage alot easier and more positively after that. You might have also managed to break a pin but You'd have to pull it apart to find out.
More Suzuki parts going to the big Suzuki Heaven in the sky!
Apart from the normal amount of build up on the drain plug magnet not really, looked okay.smileysmoke wrote:did you find any metal in your oil?
So Im going to have a pro pull it down for me and chuck the new stuff in. I don't have the patience, tools, or skill to do the diff, well thats what I think. But till that happens Im going to put in some new seals and axle bearings in so the rest is all good to go back in, in one hit once its sorted.

i managed to snap my detroit locker one of the round discs was snapped in four.
When i first had problem pulled thrid member out and little bit of spring looking stuff came out thought not much of it as i never put it in and didnt know about the springs. i decided to tighten everything up and give that a go. fantastic worked breilliant again then 3hrsw wheeling later started silgling on me agan. this time took whole thing apart and whammo it fell to pieces so stuck single back in and been limp wheeling ever since
Chasing anot er rear third member so i can weld one and have a spare. or should i just weld it and worry bout spare if ans when i need it?
