I'm having a fair bit of trouble finding a coily tank for my EFI conversion.
I would rather not use a surge tank with 2 pumps if i can avoid it, trying to keep costs as low as possible.
I already have a LWB vit tank with the EFI pump in there and would love to fit it into my sierra. Putting it in the stock location wont be possible as there's not quite enough clearance between the rear crossmember and the rear diff. Also the exhaust would have to be changed.
Was considering setting it halfway into my ute tub, what would the legalities of this be like? Anyone have any helpful advice? Coily tanks seem to be a bit of a mythical creature.
I have read that the SWB vit tank will fit into a sierra. How much difference is there between the SWB and LWB tanks? Is this an easy fit or lots of stuffing around?
cheers

vitara tank
You can fit LWB vit tanks into a siera, i know this for a fact having done it myself. It is a bitch as you have no clearance between the chassis rails, you have to have the tank hanging about 10mm down between the bottom of the chassis rails and the joining lip of the tank.
You also have to completely cut out the old shock crossmember, fabricate another one and weld that in.
Another problem is you dont have better clearance underneath the tank compared to the old one, infact it could be slightly lower, i havent measured it yet, im going to make a bashplate for it.
You also have to create a new exhaust as there is no room for it to come out the back. You can run it up inside the wheelwell, but my suspension is really flexy and would have hit so i have run the exhaust out the drivers side. Im going to seal up the rear window in my hardtop to make it legal. If you have a softtop i dont think you can run exhast out side legally, but not quite sure on that.

I've set up a car with a LWB tank 1/2 through the floor. It was OK, but the new floor height is pretty much at the top of the wheel tub, so you loose a lot of room. also, most of the strength vanishes in the floor - the foot floor area you're left with gets pretty saggy.
Unless you fully boxed it in and vented the box to the outside of the car, it would also be WAAAY illegal as it would be considered inside the passenger compartment.
It's great for exhaust clearance and clearance in general but it's not the best outcome.
Here's a pic:

Hey taff, Myself and mud_muncher were working on fitting my swb efi vitara tank on the weekend. I cut off all of my old mounts and have made some new mounts out of 50x50x3RHS plated on end with captive nut for the tube crossmember at the rear and will plate the underside of the stock shock crossmember and run the same rhs mount plated on the end with a captive nut welded in. Is should work out ok.
In terms of clearance, I have a 2 inch bodylift and I've removed the stock vitara overflow tank thing that you can see in steves pic (little plastic tank) and will utilise the stock sierra one in the rear drivers guard to get the tank up high enough so that the fuel filler runs over the top of the chassis rail instead of below it. Its a tight fit in this regard but it leaves enough room to run the exhaust down the passenger side...just.
In relation to its setup compared to a stock sierra tank, I'm pretty sure the vit tank is sitting up a bit higher. I will be running a bashplate with mine as well. I noticed when running the 34s that I hardly ever hit my tank anymore.

Work - KPD4X4.COM - KPD Industries Australian Distributor of Diesel Power Modules - Germany.
Play - dank's zook

Dank - that's my experience too. The SWB tank will go in fairly well with a 2" BL, and there is still room for the exhaust, but only just.
I can't comment on the stock shock crossmember, they've always come out on anything I've worked on.
(Note, the holes in the rear crossmember are there because it was cut out for fitment of the pintle mount and rewelded, sleeved with heavy wall tube internally. It's the stock rear crossmember in the stock spot.)
This car still runs the exhaust down the LHS of the tank as per factory.
