HELP NEEDED!! Buying Toyota

Hi gents,

Im looking into buying a large 2nd hand family mover (2000 model LX470 Lexus or 105 series cruiser most likely the V8 version also).(Swaying more towards the Lexus)

Now im interested to know is there anything i should look for regarding either of these models, also how reliable are the Toyota 4.7ltr V8's, there auto transmissions and differntial's in them both and are they expensive for spare parts.

Any idea how much to convert these V8's to LPG or the injected type LPG systems ?.

Do thing regularly go wrong with these models.

Its use will be mainly highway and everyday roadwork, not after it for offroad , just require something for myself & wife & kids to do some long distance sight seeing/travelling and some weekends away, its would also be used for towing boat, big caravan etc etc on holidays.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated as im looking to purchase within the next 8-10wks and are doing some research and hunting now.

Yes i realised they would be extremely thirsty, what V8 isnt, but have heard mixed storys regarding this, some saying the 4.5 6 is thirstier and others say the V8 is, i would be putting it on injected LPG or something similar which should keep the economy within reason im hoping, ive had an 95 model 80 series 4.5 5spd and that was thirsty as hell and im hoping the 8 would be on par or even better on fuel.

Also have had a GQ 4.2ltr 5spd on LPG getting around 400ish from a 90ltr tank, also a GQ LWB RB30 on LPG and was getting excellent economy, 600-650k's around town on 125ltr tank.

and i thought i was hard done by gettin 14l/100k outa the surf... and the only patrol would give me 9.5l/100k....

I didn't think the V8 was that bad, its better than the 6 definitely!

agreed its better than the 6, but its not something i would consider good econ... but, im a fan of getting good range outa my tank

My old man has gone from a 1994 4.5L petrol manual 80 series to a 1999 4.5L petrol manual 100 series and then to a 2003 4.7L V8 petrol automatic 100 series. He has owned them all from new and has had them always serviced at toyota every 10,000kms.
The fuel economy in the V8 Auto 100 series has been the best, and its an auto! His V8 has just hit 130,000kms and he has NOT had to replace anything on top of the usual regular service items. Half of those kms have been offroad (nothing serious) towing about 1 tonne.
None have been on gas so can't comment on that but I hope this helps as all have been flawless.

My last 2 rigs were both turbocharged straight gas research jobbies, both went extremely well for big 4x4's and had no trouble wheelspinning on 35's pedes which is what they always ran on, now this isnt for me it's for the family, i have moved away from the 4x4 scene for awhile but i will be stepping back into a patrol or petrol 80 series which will no doubt be turbocharged on straight LPG when the time comes, by the way i wouldnt be knocking my rigs simmo84, just by looking at your rig in your sig mate, a 1986 hilux and nothing to write home about .


DGS4WD thanks for the input mate, sound like the V8 version in either Landcruiser or Lexus might be the go then, if i find it to thirsty i will fit the gas injection to it.

dont think hes knockin ya rigs cobber, just sayin it how it is...

doesnt matter what he drives does it? might be nothin to write home about to you, but for him, and many others, its all they want and need.

Mate if you check my profile you will see i have been a member of this forum alot longer than i care to remember, and if there's ever been the need to ask about anything i do, im asking for others PERSONAL EXPERIANCE and advice on the V8 version landcruiser which i am on the market to buy, Now have either you or him owned a late model V8 Landcruiser at all ? or have you just heard storys about a mates cousins brothers boyfreinds V8 landcruiser that was thirsty, if there is nothing positive to put into what im asking or you have never had first hand experiance in owning any of these vehicles then dont comment its really that simple.

no i dont own one, yes i have driven one. iv also stopped at a servo in one. your set on getting one it seems, and the only diff between the lexus and toyota is the lexus has a few more creature comforts, so what is it you prefer? reliability of the engine? dunno. but the auto box is strong and the front diff in the 105 is weak.

ive only driven the lexus v8 a few times. it was a nice ride. and had oodles of power. but if you drive it hard you can watch the fuel gauge move.

Yes mate having a parent with cancer who went onto pass away and then having 3 kids over the past few years will do that to a man, i appreciate your input keep it coming peoples.
