What ratio are stock WT diffs? Can I run 33" tyres on standard diffs or do I have to do a cog swap. At this stage I have standard gearing on my 1988 model Sierra. I will be doing a SPOA conversion next month and after it's lifted, I want to put some big rubber under the guards. I've got 30" tyres at the moment, and I will be buying some offset rims and tyres 32" or 33", if I lower the ratio in the diffs can I get away with it until I save up again for Calmini transfer gears... Plus where do you get the 4.1 gearing or whatever it is??

I would probably get gears first then tyres.

And what are Maruties, are they a oversea's model of the Sierra?

Maruti is 1ltr sierra with WT housings running the 4.1 ratios. Damn hard to find over here not sure over your way. I think they were around 94?

Try the zook wreckers Mud4B or Sam or one of the suzishops maybe.

4.1 was the standard diff gear in a 1.0 litre, and is not interchangable with a 1.3 gear as far as I am aware, so don't look for a 4.1 gear to suit a 1.3 WT/NT.

There are also 4.6something vitara ratios, which are quite difficult to find, and quite desirable. as most people find 5.12's a bit short for road use.

Jimny's are 4.09 ( reverse rotation front)
Coil sierras are 3.9 (reverse rotation front.)

What about the maruits running the WT diff housings? I thought they had 4.1 centres. As Per these threads:

5.12s are sweet with the standard transfer and 34" Swampers, holds road speeds good and give low range a little lower than standard. I ran 235 75s with standard gearing before, and its heaps better with 34s and 5.12s.

My understanding is even thought they are WT width, they are 1.0 components, so not interchangable gears.

4.6 is available in the auto 4cyl vitaras, 5.12 for the 5 sp :)

There are apparently 4.3 jimny gears as well according to suzuki, but apparently not all auto jimny's run them so they are very hard to find.

The 4.625's are in the carby 3 speed auto and the 2.0 4 cyl & V6 manuals.

I also have a set of Vit 4.3's to suit a Sierra.

so let me get this right, the 4.1 and the 5.12 gears are both able to be put in a sierra? is there much playing around? or is it a whole diff swap thing?

pull out your 3rd member undo some bolts take centre out take gear off put other gear on then take to diff shop to do the rest (set backlash put new pinion seal in) did mine the other day cost $100

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I was wondering about the 5.12 centres -
I just rolled my car and counted a bit over 5 revs of the tailshaft to 1 wheel rev (both wheels on the ground) so I guess I have 5.12 centres, correct?

Also, what Vitaras did they come out in, as I think I need to chase down a spare (I put cornflour in the diff to make it a locker).

i know of a guy here in perth who runs 5.something gears as opposed to tranny gears and he suffers a lot more breakages than most and thats running only 32" tyres. I think transfer gears are a better option

should be less breakages with diff gears as the only parts taking extra stress are the components between wheel and diff center (ie axles)

transfer ratio reduction gears - the stresses are on the transfer, tranfer mounts, tailshaft, unis, yolks, springs, diff center, axles, ect

personally I think the ideal way would be both 5.1 transfer gears and diff gears of something in the 4:1 to 5:1 range. If you want to spend the money

should be less stresses on it all

either that or run stocky 27" tyres (not) ;)

ofr I run the yukon 4.57s on my rig (when its running :? ). I set the gears up with a mate and they have been faultless. its very important to shim them properly. I'm not running a solid pinion spacer either, just the normal crush sleeve which I probably should - one weak point apparently.

Bloody good combo it was too before my engine and box swap. 5spd box, 4.9 trail tough tranny, 4.57 yukon diff gears rear lockrite airlocker front, very capable with the 34" swamper ltbs. The good thing about spreading the load through reductions in both tranny and differential is that it doesn't load up one component of the drivetrain too heavily. Everyone goes 6.5 tranny gears and 3.7 diffs and they are breaking transfer cases and mounts left right and centre. The only thing I ever broke were stock front cvs, have HD ones now.

diff gears and tranny gears is not the most economical way to go as tranny gears by themselves are well priced but I feel my setup is going to be well balanced for power distribution once i have the 3spd auto, 4age 20v, 4.9 tranny and 4.57 diff gears working. At 100km/h (assuming auto is final 1:1) i'll be doing around 4600rpm at 100km/h, lucky the 20v likes to rev (8500 ecu limited). I may possibly drop back to 3.7s if it annoys me too much.

I'd say go for it. But before buying off low range, check some of the aussie suppliers. Locktup have them on their website for 484 delivered. This would be close to a total inc shipping from lowrange I reckon.

Yep 5.1 times round on tailshaft is 5.1 diff
don't know about vitara models though if I guessed I'd say manuals but ???

I've got the same gears as steve atm (6.4's) seems fine atm but this year I'm hoping to be a member of the 34" club just want to counter it and maybe get alittle more crawl to make the high range abit usable

yeah I just bought 34'LTB swampers
I wasn't wrapped with my high range even with 6.5's in the transfer on 32's, so I think it may be time for some diff gears to go in. Because I dont really drive on the road if I can avoid it Im not really fussed about how many revs its doing at 100 etc just that is got good take off and pickup in high range.
Also take some strain off other components.

does anyone know were i can get the 4.6 gears, have a blown crown wheel and pinion finding it very hard to replace.

3 speed auto vitaras seem to be everywhere in pull-it-yourself wreckers down here in Vic, and the diffs seem to hang around for a little while to.
