87 Hilux noise from drive components

Post by CHIEF88 »

Hey all,

quick question..

I have a noise coming from under my car, its kind of a scratchy noise, not a constant noise but a scratchy noise on something that obviously revolves.

I don't think its brakes as it doesn't happen when I brake and sometimes doesn't go away when I do brake.

I don't think its clutch because it happens while driving in gear but not during a gear change and doesn't go away with clutch in.

Steering doesn't seem to trigger it either.

Its pretty loud at times and comes and goes while driving. but change in speed can make it go away.

Doesn't happen when cars idling but starts as soon as I take off. then goes and comes.

I think its drive shaft, diff or transfer case?

Could the drive shaft be out of grease at a point?

Only started making the noise today. Tomorrow I will have a look and give the points a re greasing but was wondering if any ones had a similar thing?

Dean.

ok so.. re greased all nipples on the shafts, they didn't need much.
Got my mate to have a look and listen while i drove forward and back a little.
The noise is coming from the pinion seal area on the rear diff. Could this mean that the seal has come loose / broken ?
I have replaced it in the past but I did notice there is a bit of leaking around it again this time.
If I replace again does anyone have any tips on how to put it in smoothly? I remember last time it was a very very snug fit.
Also what sort of grease should I smear around the pinion seal when putting git in?

sounds like it could possibly be the oil seal guard flange touching on the diff housing??
Or some debrits in there.

Re what grease.
I would use rubber grease when installing any rubber seal.
Seal on the pinion area, and between the lips of the seal, so its got good lubricated area to run on. AFter that the diff oil can do it.

Very little silastic, if any on the outer part of the seal where it sits in the diff housing. As sealant can make the seal difficult to put in, as it may want to squash out due to the silastic allowing it to move.

Did you do the pinion nut up to the same spot as you removed it??

Yea trains pinion nut went on to approx same place as it came off. I marked the edge to line it up. I changed it near 6 months ago now and all has been fine. As you said I think last time i found it hard to put in as id put a bit to much silastic on the outside of seal, was a good fit but I found it hard to put in.

Update the car has now developed a shudder that intensifies when I come to a stop. The engine mounts are fine and doesn't shudder unless I'm driving (forward and reverse.) So something on the drive train as well.

Could my diff be rooted ? I don't remember doing anything to trigger all of this. Its happened by itself.
