Anyone stuck a 4.5l Cruiser engine in a Lux?
As title asks, has anyone stuck a 4.5l Cruiser engine into a Hilux before?
If its not upside down and on fire, I'm not trying hard enough.......

In a dual cab or single cab? Might not fit in the tray of a dual cab.
They're a long and tall motor - I can't imagine it's going to go in there willingly - Even 1GGTE's and 1JZ's are pushing lengthwise.
1UZ would have to be the better fit.
Steve.

It could be done but you may have to do firewall mods and the radiator would have to go in the back as well
the 4.5 are a really strong tough motor that is hard to kill and luv a turbo
this is how much room i have in my truck and i am only running a 2j
The radiator is in the back
2j has more power and torque at all rpms plus an extra 2000 rpm of revs and about 150 more horse power
plus better fuel consumption
dellow even do a bell housing to go to your gearbox this would have to be custom for the 4.5
you'll have fun nomatter what you do as long as you finish it and how long that takes will depend on which engine you choose
cheers

Yeah I am a fan of the 1j/2j, have owned a few cars with them in it and love them. I dont really want to go V8 if I can, same with EFI, I have a nasty habit of finding the biggest baddest bog hole and generally electrics and mud/water dont mix all that well
I just need a repower for the old girl, the dirty old sluggy grandfather spec 4Y whilst a bit of fun in the bush, is a complete slug on the road especially trying to maintain 110km/h in it constantly. Mates got a 4.5l 75 series ute which has never had an issue, we were talking about potential swaps the other day for it and it was suggest.
Another mate has a 3.5l 2wd hilux and I am really impressed with the power/torque from that. I keep telling him I am going to steal it for the conversion as it should bolt straight in, but its the new rego costs of V8's in QLD that will kill that idea (over $900 now for 12 months rego and CTP)

well believe it or not the 2jz is more water proof than the 4.5
this is due to the sensor, crank and cam sensor locations(plus they are fully sealed) and most of all low tension ignition that is mounted in between the cams nice and high and dry
the 4.5 either has a dissy right at the front or coil packs with leads in the same location lots to get wet and easy although they are well sealed but if you try hard (as we do)
my mates 4.5 80 coffs if you slam it into the water at any greater than 60kph not so for the 2j it loves it no leads or dissy to get wet.

Its an issue thats for sure.
Where are/have you mounted the ECU?
No issues there so far?
What about the turbo sides of things, I am assuming you modified the inlet to the snorkel?
I am looking for something not overly difficult to install I have a mate who is a fabricator but he is slack as all buggery so I would prefer to be able to do most things myself, with the truck off the road for the least amount of time possible.

My Dad's a couple of 4.5 petrol 80's and they're not well waterproofed at all.
Interested in the 1/2J being good in this regard - I've always liked the idea of these motors in something.
Steve.

If you look at a 1fzfe and a 7mge supra/cressida motor side by side, the 7m is a spitting image of the 4.5 but 33% smaller....and the 7m bolts straight onto the engine mounts in a lux, with a supra W bellhousing, it mates up to the stock 5 speed too....why would you bother with a 1fz or a 1uz....the 7m comes turbod too
Confucious say...man who argue with idiot, worserer himself
So the 7m is a straight bolt in? Using hilux mounts it will bolt straight to the current gearbox?dow50r wrote:If you look at a 1fzfe and a 7mge supra/cressida motor side by side, the 7m is a spitting image of the 4.5 but 33% smaller....and the 7m bolts straight onto the engine mounts in a lux, with a supra W bellhousing, it mates up to the stock 5 speed too....why would you bother with a 1fz or a 1uz....the 7m comes turbod too
Rig is 4Y powered YN67 Single cab.
If thats the go I might just scout a N/A engine, replace the gasket with a new HKS metal one and run the truck like that. Seems the easiest way to get useable power without too many hassles.

I mounted a std aircleaner barell on the RH side with custom snorkel and have an aircleaner and snorkel on the left as well i only am using the RH at the moment but will be connecting the left one soon for more flow and longer life from the aircleanersDrift Technician wrote:Its an issue thats for sure.

the computor is mounted above the glove box directly under the top of the dash
I cannot see a 7m being any easier than a 2j because the 2j will bolt in using a delow bellhousing to the gearbox I doubt that the 7m lines up with the factory front eng mount locations
My car runs great and is my daily driver i run 35's and 5.29 diff gears and a r150 box it pulls like a mofo
you will need the r150 if putting a 6 in it your 4cl box will blow in no time and if you do all your bellhousings to suit the small box when you finally work out you need the big box you will need to get your bellhousing modded or replaced
You have not said what model lux you have
i am assuming it is like an 84-88 model due to the engine they have a bigger engine bay than mine an 80 model so i do not think that you would need to put the rad in the back with a 2j
dosnt matter what you do it will be better than your old Y
cheers

Is there any issues with the turbos/manifolds in regards to cracking etc, especially when water/mud is involved that you know of?

A simple 3rz
much easier than a 6 still enough power probably similar to a NA 7M but weighs less and heaps smaller

These are not a direct bolt in though are they?
Am I able to use the same box I have now?
I understand if I can, it should just be a simple case of grinding the mounts off, bolting the engine to the box, installing into car, do gearbox xmember up, then weld mounts onto chassis?
Sound correct?
What sort of price roughly am I looking at for a 3RZ?

Its that easy, you should be able to pick an engine up and all the bits you need for around $1200 - $2000 depends where you go.Drift Technician wrote:These are not a direct bolt in though are they?

Do a search on it theres heaps of info on here about this conversion.

I am currently doing a 4Y to 3rz in a YN67, engine cost me 2400 and that was including, complete engine with all accessories,(powers steer pump, altinator, ac compressor), fuel tank from a prado with pump inside, entire wiring loom out of a wellback dualcab, so all dash wiring and everything
all is going well so far tank took some frabrication to get in without moving the spreader engine is currently mounted in using 10mm spacer plates and the 4Y engine mounts, but that may change yet as cab is off
