4 runner with holden 5lt surging
Hey guys, I am having a problem, and would like some opinions.
I have a 4runner with an EFI Holden 5lt in it. The car will be driving and then sporadically surge, generally these are under moderate to full acceleration however while cruising on the freeway today it started to do it and I would have to jab the throttle until it stopped hesitating/surging.
It feels like it is missing however it isn’t just happening at a certain rpm which makes me wonder as my previous experiences with my other cars misfiring it has been consistently and not sporadic like this.
Also when it misfires it sometimes flames out the exhaust from unburnt fuel being dumped which again indicates a miss. I don’t think it would be the fuel pump as it is still priming strongly and it isn’t necessarily only happening when the fuel pump is under high load.
I am thinking that some new plugs and leads are in order along with a cleanout of the fuel filter however I would like to ask others opinions incase I have missed something obvious and I cant really do too much atm as I am on holidays in Melbourne visiting family and have very few tools to work with. Oh and yes it has a full tank so its not fuel surge.
Anyway, any help would be much appreciated.

do plugs and leads and cap and rotor..
i would think that within the next few weeks your ignition module gonna go as thats what they can do once they start to play up. i wouldnt replace it untill it stops though because they can be quite costly to purchase. and also a fuel pump can also give very similar random miss and pop.
unfortunatly unless it does it all the time it can be hard to diagnose without putting it on a dyno

dont forget that toyote hilux fuel tanks that were originaly carbureted
have a tendency to get vapour lock when the car is converted to efi
holden v6 &v8 were very suceptable to this
the fuel is picked up about 20-30 mm awayfrom the return line as
duel is sent forward the excess is sent back via return line and the fuel gets hot next to the pickup and it vapour locks and then engine stumbles stalls miss all sorts of dramas
even to the point of cutting out totally untill it cools

i kno the following sounds silly but it does make a difference!!!
if you have the metal engine covers on the fuel rail pull them off. not a solution but will help as they trap heat and heat up the fuel flowing through the fuel rail. when the return is so close to the pickup it will heat the same fuel over and over again.

yet another thing to check out, thanks guys, any more advice, even if not related to this topic would be great as I have only just gotten the car and all my previous experiences have been with nissan engines (sr and rb), 1jz's/2jz's, ls1/2 or rotors. Ill post a proper introduction with pics etc later when I have the time and the car is a little less pig like
I was also thinking perhaps the TPS is having issues, might give that a clean just to see, not that thats a full ix, but a bandaid non the less

I had exactly the same problem and it was the fuel pump, not sure which one, because i have a lift pump and a high pressure pump i replaced both of them and it's been great since.
Worst thing is, the amount of sensor's and crap that they have, in the commodore forum there is a section with all the different fault codes and common prob's, the most common prob in there is ruff idle and stalling, there is a heap of different causes, but they all have a way of testing.
Can you check for fault codes on your ECM (do you have a light connected to the ECM in the truck) http://www.justcommodores.com.au/articles.php this is a link to get to the fault codes.

its very rare for a TPS to play up in a 5L.
coolant temp and map sensors are the only common ones that will cause a miss and occasional backfire.
the oxy sensors in most 5L are always stuffed resulting in poor'er fuel economy.
stuffed coolant temp sensors stuff up economy as well.
at next service i would replace all 3 with leads plugs cap and rotor. all up it wont be too expensive
ohh and reading fault codes with 5L's is almost useless. most of the time they say no code or old codes. its more trial and error.

Im going to take her round to a mates workshop this weekend and treat her to some new leads, plugs and fuel filter along with an oil change and wire in a diagnostic light and then see how that goes (I know the oil has nothing to do with it, but it looks like tar). I did notice that the fuel pump was sounding a little louder when I drove it last night so if the above doesn’t fix it then maybe that’s something to look at, like I said I have a vl pump sitting here. Ill also remove the aforementioned covers and perhaps give a few of the sensors a going over with contact cleaner. As for fuel economy, I can’t keep an eye on it because the fuel gauge has carked it so ill have to wait until I get home to have a look at that one. She is in need of all of the above anyway so even if they don’t fix it, they will go a long way to helping in general.

Check the ignition system is working properly.
My dizzy cap had a crack in it it was fine taking it real easy but would do it on the highway sometimes and when i put the right foot down. And then used to do it completely at random. A bit hard to diagnose while your heads under it idleing though.
Mightn't be any of those though.
