Ideal wheelbase

Post by tanshi »

Ok so i have done a bit of a search around and know what wheel bases are standard for the short and long wheel base sierra. I have a long wheel base LJ81 which i am thinking of stretching the wheel base on but would like to know how much peeps have gained on various things and what there experiances with each gain have been. ie i have gained x amount and found it was a bit too much. or i gained y amount and it wasnt quite enough. basically trying to figure how much is the right amount.

thoughts???

mines +6" front and -1" rear for a total of 7" stretch - puts the driver's weight over the back wheels and engine weight behind the front wheels - its WAY more stable on and off road, and the extra length smooths out bumps a bit more i've noticed.

downside of extending is you lose a little turning circle though.

i suppose at some stage you need to start considering ramp over angle too... not really an issue until you start looking at a LWB with 100" wheelbase... need to be looking at bigger and bigger tyres as you go longer.

5" forward and 7" back gives me a 92" wheelbase
works well but am stretching it to 100"
but this is not a streeter and i think 6" in the front would be silly.

i would go for 3" not 6" forward by the looks of it as redzook has more clearance on 37s then u do on 31s.

have u measured the WB alien?

i used a 60 series ps box

forward facing pitman arm makes it easier to do
dont have to worry bout modifying the front body mount

What I don't like about your wheelbase extension and alot of others alien is that you still have alot of shackle and bar infront of the tyres so approach angle is not brilliant for the work involved. Granted your flex is good but I would prefer to sacrifice a little flex for approach angle where I wheel.

You could if you dont mind steering in the opposite direction to which you are turning ;)

When you think about it to make up an adapter with a gear setup for the wheel would be worth it for the benefits.

You could flip the arm on the steering box around if you come up with a mount so that the tie rod mounts behind the diff thus allowing you to moving the diff forward 8"

well im looking at 36 plus tyres, basically i can gain about a foot of length with out any issues at all. they arent the longest wheel base in the first place. ie only about 6 inches longer than a short wheel base sierra,

LJ81 is a stockman trayback, no?

If you're aiming for 36"+ I think you want as close to 100" as you can reasonably achieve.

I've driven a "sierra" with 36's and 100" of wheelbase and it climbed very well.

On the ute that I'm building I'm pushing the rear diff back 150mm and the front forward about 30-40mm which will therefore end up about 101". I need to move the rear to make it proportional
