what sort of range do guys have??? or wat u think is needed?
hey guys
i have a chev in my patrol and its on straight gas. currently has about 160 ltrs of usable gas i was thinking that this wont be enough to do some bigger trips.
obviosuly a chev on full noise is pretty thirsty but yeh not sure. i am not looking to do outback crossings but wknds away and that not being shit scared if i will make it to s servo.

Agreed....It wasnt on gas but my TB42 patrol would get 400km from a tank of fuel. Out bush (4x4 park) i would only get the trip out there (100km) and about 2.5 days driving....and would put another 20L in for the trip home to make sure. and i definitely didnt have 500hp (just thirsty tb42 )chimpboy wrote:Yikes.mikesmith wrote:be lucky to get 600 i dont think it would get near that. on full noise thru the bush i reckon i may get 400 max pushing it.
500hp motor.
Well to answer your question I would not be comfortable with only 400km of range once out bush.

I've got 95 litres of petrol and 90 litres of LPG which will get me around 700km's.
I would think you might struggle with outback touring being on straight gas as LPG isn't available in that many outback servos. You'd need to do some serious planning and make a few phone calls to confirm supply before heading off I reckon.

My GQ gets 650km to a tank on average with my normal driving. When we go away, fully loaded with the 35's on it will do a bit over 550ish. The reason i get the km's i get is because of the way i drive it. Admittedly (for you) having a petrol (LPG) motor it wont make as much difference-but having a lighter foot can make a big difference. Also travelling at 80km/h instead of 100km/h makes one helluva difference. I rarely travel at 100-110km/h.
Most of the time we go to the vic high country for camping/wheeling. I fill up at Wallan (cheap fuel), top up at Seymour (home), then do another top up at Mansfield BP. I ALWAYS take a 20 jerry can of diesel - just in case. I can usually do from friday night right through to sunday arvo without filling up (usually have about a quarter tank left), with touring/playing over the weekend. I usually get about 400km from a tank while driving in the bush.

I agree. And the thing is it's not just "do they have LPG", it's also, "are they open when I am passing through"? If you're hoofing it through a particular leg of your journey with a really early start, it is great to have enough range to just drive past the servo that hasn't opened yet, rather than having to wait until they open because you know you can't make it to the next one.Emo wrote:I've got 95 litres of petrol and 90 litres of LPG which will get me around 700km's.

Having said that I did find that LPG is much more available in the bush than it used to be.
This is not legal advice.
I have 150 ltrs of LPG in my 302 powered GQ, i can get 660 km on the main roads but off road less than half of that.
Jan 07 a trip on Fraiser Island i needed to return to the mainland on the 4th day to refuel. I was getting 280-300Km for the 150 ltrs and that was driving to conserve fuel and i have half as much HP as you
A gerry can of LPG might be the go, now there is a product that i could sell

OR, you could either track down a fuel hose (standard LPG bottle to automotive LPG connecter), or if you're REALLY keen, make one up.....ANDREWGQ 351 wrote:A gerry can of LPG might be the go, now there is a product that i could sell
RACV and the likes used to carry them to fuel up dedicated LPG cars that run out of fuel, but i was told the adapter hoses were banned a few years back.
Im about 950-1050km when I refill in the Discovery which is fine for touring. It carries 150 litres. Its also enough to get you through if you're doing a night run and a lot of the servos are closed. This said, shortly I'll up it to 200 litres with a sill tank for real remote work.
Cheers

MY Uncle has something like 270lt in a 80series. Yes it can drive for ages before a refill. But fark with all the rest of the shit that people carry. I bet it handles large a barge loaded. And thats alot of fuel to be sloshing around. As most LR tanks I have seen dont have baffles.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....

All depends how much driving you intend to do, and how much low range hard shit you will do.. crusing around, it maybe fine.
maybe find a bigger LPG tank..
But then you wouldnt put a big thirsty donk in ya truck without expectin it to use shit loads.
That doesn't sound right. Have you had it tuned at a reputable workshop?BushTuckerNed wrote:worst i got from my hilux was about 110km to 60 litres.
i get 250km from it on the highway
thats a injected 5 litre. dont think ill be doing any touring trips any time soon
Thats about as bad as my old mans V6 Rodeo!! (and THAT is BAAAAD!)
It's impossibly bad.coxy321 wrote:That doesn't sound right. Have you had it tuned at a reputable workshop?BushTuckerNed wrote:worst i got from my hilux was about 110km to 60 litres.

I have the same setup, 95 main and 175 sub, havent had all 270 on board before but i somehow figure the extra weight off all that extra fuel onboard would be outweighed by fuel economy suffering, esp in the desert.turps wrote:MY Uncle has something like 270lt in a 80series. About the only thing you would need that kind of fuel for is perhaps the CSR; one day

I have fueled up fully and towing a off road camper I got just under 2000Km's out of the full load. And that was following the coast road from Sydney to Melbourne going up and down the mountains to see stuff.
Out of the main 95L tank I'll get about 550-600km before the fuel light starts to come on. (If flashes off and on a few times before it stays on fully). Thats city and burb driving, nothing over 80k.
This is in a 1Hz turbo intercooled at 16psi, 33's and all the bar work and drawers full of crap.
i am not looking at touring more going away for wknds and long wknds 4wding.
i am not complaining that my 500hp chev uses a lot of fuel i am asking wat ppl think range wise i should look at.
i dont want to be on a trip and be hoping to get to a servo not the best feeling.
i think i can fit another tank in under the tray so i may do that and if i go away i will fill it.

In WA a big problem I have found with gas is that roadhouses will have run out or have faulty pumps. On a 5000km trip I had this problem 3 times. When there is no other gas for at least 400km you have no choice but to wait - unless you have dual fuel.
The best I get on gas is from my chev is 300km from 67L.
If you have a range of 4-500km's then you should be able to do plenty of weekend trips, just try not to rely on any particular roadhouse having gas when you need it.
