Very smokey 4.2l Turbo Diesel GU? Oil, Boost?

Post by CHUUBZ »

Hey guys I got a 1998 Turbo Diesel GU 4.2L with 128,000kms on it.
I've been flashed and pull down at the lights by people telling me that my car is very smokey.

Its most smokey when the revs are down low 1500-2500rpm like going up a hill or something in low gear be it 3rd 4th or 5th and the cars struggling then the smoke just pours out...

Also it feel like its lost power a bit... My old man has a fresh rebuilt 4.2l TD (80 series Cruiser) and his feels much more powerfull and tourquy than mine.

Could it be as simple as a boost leak or something.

Another thing I noticed that could be related to it is that it chews ALOT of oil, I checked the oil indicator the other day and it went from medium to below low in 1500kms. How many Litres of oil does the GU 4.2l take on service anyway?

Thanks alot fellas.

so while its labouring its smoking, thats normal.. but if its that bad, there will be something wrong

have you bought fuel from somewhere different recently? Bad batch of fuel?? Drain tanks and change filters and start with fresh fuel from somewhere you trust..

If its using oil, then Mayday.. they hold 10ltrs with filters.

Run some CEM through it. http://www.costeffective.com.au/
Flushing Oil Concentrate

Few people on EOz have used it with great results cleaning gummed rings.
maybe its not had a good service life...

had it tuned lately?

Check air filter and intake tubes/snorkel. If it's not getting enough air (filter blocked) it'll be spewing black smoke (unburnt fuel) and will have lost power. If it's spewing white/blue smoke, it's burning oil and you have a problem.

like hell it is.

first thing is...is it factory turbo vechile or atmo with turbo added on. has it got a boost comp?

smoke at only low rpm is generally not air restriction.

check fuel filter.
most likly it will be injectors but the other thing that can cause this is EGR stuck open. block EGR off with a plate and see if it improves.

you assies have a real hard on for smoking diesels.

got plenty of patrols, navara, hiluxs running around locally here and NONE blow ANY smoke whatsoever.
you just need to retune them to run on the crap fuel we have.

it was an NA factory but he strapped a HITATCHI turbo I think?
Anyway thing was rebuilt with turbo pistons etc so im lead to believe its the same as a factory Turbo Diesel.

most likly then its missing a boost comp.
get one fitted and pump tuned, should find that fuel economy improves as well.

I have sometimes seen this issue when running full synthetic oil and it passes by the turbo oil seal.
check for oil in the piping running to the engine, there will always be a little bit of blow by but shouldnt be heaps.
worth a shot??

first of all take the piping going to the engine from the turbo off run a clean rag through it if its oily in there you are safe

if there is no oil and its burning with in the engine its rebuild time..

also start your engine then take the oil cap off or the dip stick out.. if it puffs alot of smoke out.. thats bad

that or take it to a diesel mechanic.. get him to compression test it then tune if its ok
