It runs fine but gearbox only has 4th gear(4runner box) I'm tossing up putting a supra box in it or going commodore auto , any info on the problems i may have doin this ie trans tunnel clearance with commodore box and connecting transfer case to either of these cheers

G52

Post by V6Forerunner »

The gearbox is the g52. If its only done a selector or something minor i will rebuild box and see how it holds up.

G52 should do ok but a R150/R151 is stronger.

IMO which ever is cheaper go that way, unless of course you intend to put a V8 up front some time soon, then go the R150/R151.

Possibly a dumb question but what are the 150 and 151 and which model did they come in ?

They came in all manual Surf's from bout 90 - 95 and I think in some/all manual 4Runners from the same era.
Probably other Toyo's as well, Supra maybe??.

I think they only came in the V6 4 runners.

I think the G52 is probably not strong enough for the commo V6, my advice would be to go for an R150F from a 4 Runner/Surf, problem is I think they all have chain driven transfers, which isn't too bad as they have better ratios than standard gear driven and don't break easily, but they also require some wiring to activate the transfer motor.

Cheers for that lads, do you know if it requires any other mods to fit a later model gearbox ?

Possibly gearbox cross member and/or tail shaft.

Hopefully someone who has done it will post up.
