Shopping Trolley and then camping trips with light sand dune work and some boat slip usage.

2.5 highflow straight through exhuast and muff

K's per tank 700 from 80 liter tank
11 liter per hunderd k's

What do you guys recokon? Is she a goer if an onsite inspection checks out? Good value or is he a bit optimistic and i should keep looking. Here in Tassie so cars are a little more than on the mainland.


I'm looking for a stock well kept gq to built up as a tourer/weekend plaything.

How many kms on the motor? do they tell you? can they prove a sevice history by a competent mechanic?

357,000 i think. A mate peered through the window. Also its a manual. Service history was by the owner himself.

i bought a 89' 250 000km with a turbo and lifted springs for $4000.

that being said, the body on mine is a bit rough and i had to repair some rust and cracks in the floor. i've probably spent about $1000 to get it to a roadworthy standard. (not paying any labour costs.)


If prepurchase inspection by a trusted mechanic (NOT RACQ ect) shows that it's in good nick, it'd be worth a second thought.

Thats the same as what i have, but mines a 1990 or 1991 model. If it hasn't had any harsh use, and they can PROVE the servicing (which i doubt very much), then it doesn't sound too bad.

Hi Mark,

Took it out for about a 40 min drive. The guy has looked after the oil changes and when he prattled off the next k's to change it without flinching I dont think he was pulling my leg. He was honest and pointed out minor faults. He encouraged me to get it up to 100 and beyond

Over all the transmission felt pretty good. She shimmys and shakes at in first gear and second in the lower rpm range but you arent in it for much before you hit the sweet spot of 2 to 3k rpms. Also while doing about 7-80 ks on a slight bend to the right i felt a slight shake or wobble. Running on skinny 32s. Had a steering alignment about 6 months ago.

Theres a few rattles but its 20 years old. Holy crap coils are sweet! He let me take if off a little rutted trail south of margate and we just rolled up it with ease. I even threw it in 4wd high and low. Hubs locked easily. The underside was clean and no oil spots that i could see. Nor the tell tale signs that its seen the likes of tracks we frequent. Power steering pump also looked clean. No turbo or any mods worth mentioning.

He was going on about how its a series 0 and that was the toughest 4.2 engine.

I dont think i'll make an offer. Few things that put us off is the age and price. He indicated that he wouldnt be willing to go less than 6k. He's been told that its a sweet running gq and I think he expects top dollar. The roof has little rust spots that have been treated as well as the rain rails. Also no air con and for outback travel we would prefer that luxery. Also bucket seats would be nice. Had a chip in the windscreen, but its still got plenty of rego.

Nope dont have your mobile...feel free to pm it to me. When I find one i'm really switched on about I'll probably seek your advice. I'd also probably take it to Justin or ask him if he can recommend someone who can give me a presale inspection.

Standard bullbar...non winch kind. That was about the only extra it had. oh and a dust bin.

Overall its a pretty tidy bus but I think i want to hold out for something a little more modern. I'd like to take yours for a spin one day so I can get a feel for them.

Sounds like its due for engine mounts.

Also sounds like its due for:
- radius arm bushes
- panhard rod bushes
- most likely lower draglink bushes

Its crap like that that seems minor, but if you add it all up it does cost quite a bit. That price is a bit steep considering it doesn't have a/c.

I have no issues with you driving mine, but it wont drive/handle like a stock truck. The 4 inch lift and 35's certainly makes it drive differently, not in a bad way, but just differently.

Rust and body condition will probably be the major factors when you buy one that is 20 years old. Remember that they are getting on and is rare to find one in mint condition and if you do, then it will probably be at a higher price.

If you want one for outback touring, why dont you look at something later, say late GQ's or early GU's.

Just my opinion, but the later the model you choose, the more likely you will find one in good nick and be suited to remote outback travel. Lots of guys go remote in old trucks, but usually they have owned them for some time and have all the 'issues' sorted out to make for reliable touring.

but, like all things, there's a budget to be stuck to.

I just wanted to see how yours handles. Just a quick test drive and getting her up to some speed and around some curves.

Yep thats the one I looked at. I'm leaning towards a 90's mid to lateish model. Like you said less likely to be as rough around the edges.

I think he has had it for sale for a while now. Hence the drop in price. Your input is appreciated.

This is just the first one I've looked at. Would like to drive some later ones. Even a GU would be nice. I guess I am just testing the waters for now. Doesnt hurt to window shop.
