Arm Chair mechanics speak up

Post by Singo17 »

Well the 5th Gear refused to stay in one bit. Common fault on the box no probs cruise in in 4th go to Nissan. Out of Warranty no probs well fix it anyway in for 2 days comes back no probs, drive it down the road and it feels all wrong. Pig to get in to gear all the changes are all tight as a Nats crack

Initially I thought Clutch as it wasn't engaging enough and the pedle pressure didn't feel right so I take it back gets some adjusment done to it and away we go feels good.

Then it starts acting like a pig again and I take it back and the Foreman takes it for a spin when he reverses it the things feels as if either the handbrake is on or it in 4low on the pavement. He is a bit miffed hops out has a check at me hubs etc etc . Jumps in drives off notices the Pig of a gearbox syndrome and then gets back and declares clutch master cylinder. So $157 is the bill but I go away while the part comes in and I still dont feel as if this is the fault as there was no indication at all of clutch porbs before hand and the only change to the machine was gearbox out gearbox in.

Well pulled into a servo and reverse up and she gets all bindy in the drive train. Put it into 1st take off around the corner and stop at a light in 1st clutch in hear this grabbing clunk whilst sitting there. Take off change into second as I go through neutral at about 10kph she all locks up and pulls a chirpy at the lights scarring the shyt outta the dude who forgot to allow for a safety gap behind me.

Anyways I play with the gearstick ( the one in the car BJ ) and she pops into neutral true again with a loud clunk have a look underneath for any free radicals from my gearbox and drive straight back to Nissan.

Oooopppps it might be a selector problem I say yeah it migh hey with both selector rods engaging gears at the same time you might be right my dear Watson.

I rang em 5 min ago to see what the prob was and they are waiting on a part the lovely lady couldn't tell me what bits but I am assumming some ape in the workshop has not reinstalled the detents on the shift rods properly hence the reverse line locky down the road.

I shouldnt laugh but I couldnt help it !!!!

Had a similar experiance 6 months ago with a 4 spd box ( MQ )
turned out one of the little balls that are spring loaded that drop into the indents in the shafts had "excaped" while I wasnt looking.
I assumed the ball was still in place as I rebuilt the box..... WRONG !!

took 4 hours to find the ball but I had the cleanest w/shop floor ever !!!

I now remove em one by one and put them in a zip up placky bag, then attack the rest.

Got a message from em the syncro ring on 3rd was jammed so I am guessing either a spring holding the locators wasn't installed properly or when the selector fork was relocated they got it misaligned or something.

I am not to sure about were the fifth gear sits I assume it idles on the output shaft with the rest of them so to repair 5th they would have to of stripped the shaft complete.

Yes got it back all is good no mention of paying any dollars for it or if they farked it they just said its ready here you go so by the silence I am assuming they farked something up when putting it back together.

The dealer has doen quite a few so I am assuming I am a victim of complacency and or they prolly get paid a fixed labor price from Nissan so the faster it is done the more profit they can make.
