Busted R&P 4.11s

Post by DiscoDino »

My best bud just busted a front 4.11 (Made by MD, sold to him by GBR from the US - reverse rotation)...he was backing out of the ditch in the picture below and busted it...2 picks are attached

Little Background:
Disco with OME 2" lift, ARBs F/R, 32x9.5 ETs, a wee biton the heavy side. Driver is patient and has a steady right foot (not a flogger). The R&Ps are barely 3 months old, and they were installed correctly (by a great mechanic, was there, saw it...)...there was oil, so no overheating.

PLEASE ADVISE...
SAM, can you pass this along to Mal...we do not want a recompensation from him (he's not the one who sold it), but rather just for him to help us out and tell us what he think went wrong)

They are weaker in reverse. Was there any shock loading (locker in or wheel slip/spin?). Some breakages seem to be caused by an shock loading _before_ the incident, then the actual break happens some time later when you are doing something mild - like going to the shops.
Bugger of a thing to happen as I guess you'll probably be waiting for a 4.11 to be airfreighted out to you!

Your mates rubber looks big but I am suprised you didn't bust reverse gear ... I guess the auto would probably have helped that way

It still lasted longer than my 10 spline axles with 32 inch MT/R's!!

Although I think that my axles had started to fatige before the 32's were fitted, just that it was the breaking point once they were fitted. Oh the joys in the quest for more ground clerance!!

Update:

Bill of GBR in the USa (who sold the set to my buddy) has couriered a set of 4.11s for the rear (i.e. not reverse rotation) for the time being: KICK ASS CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Haven't gotten his thoughts on this directly, but he seemed to think that the issue is NOT withdriver/installation error...

he does have a sweet right foot, no flogging...i KNOW!
