253 into 80 Series
Does anyone know who or where I can get a motor to 5 speed gear adaptor to go from a Holden 253 Blue motor to an 80 Series manual box?

Marks only do adaptors for Turbo bolt pattern Holden V8's.

Yeh that sounds like a great idea..... they are slow in hiluxs and overheat and are shit, but hey maybe cuz its it a heavier 80series it will be much faster ..dow50r wrote:put a commodore v6 in it. they have more torque and will run underwater.
They dont sound as good as a 253 thou

No offence to commo boys, but my 3rz in my lux just about beats my mates dual cab lux with one in it, hate to see one of them boat anchors in an 80..
253, slow, 308 yeh ok but still carbie.. 304 yeh better option, injection will help, everyone seems to think the 6.5 chev diesel are the go, and they stil poke along well, heaps of tourque too...

Guy's, thanks for the reply's. A couple of things I should make a note on as well,
1. I already have the 253.
2. If someone can tell me where I can get a better motor cheap, i'm all ears.
3. I have a 1HZ with 510K on the clock, so it's going to need to be changed soon.
Is the 253 really that bad of an idea? I am able to get it worked on via a bore & lower torque cams very cheap through the family.
So I ask again, is it realy that bad of an idea?

I personally wouldnt bother with a 253. I had one in my FJ55 and shait did it love to rev but not much torque. Would be quicker than a 1HZ though. Had to drive it like a 4cyl.
I also had a 308 in a 60 and it was better. Was better still after I had it stroked to a 355 by Come Racing.
But then again, it wasnt as good as my mates 60 with a 350 chev.
You can pick up 350s for good prices if you keep your eyes out on e-bay and the trading post.
The cost would be the same except for the cost of the donk.

GO the 80...The mods have started :-)
Now that we have established it is going into a 80 series, again......Jacked wrote:just cos he using an 80 series box doesnt mean its going in an 80 series.
on the fluffy side of things i would just use a 308. but i nor anyone else here knows your application so good luck
The commo v6 pffft, you would be going backwards, they go good in a hilux but in an 80 series, i dont think so.
If you are going to do a engine conversion, ask your self this. Do i really like this truck and keep it long enough to get my moneys worth (ie,dont do a engine conversion on a budget) it will only end up half done and give you nothing but problems.
I personaly like the gen 3 or chev 6 lt these can be bought brand new in a crate for 6 to 7 grand, it will bolt up to your 5 speed. and produce a bucket load of horse power all day.
At a estimate i reakon the whole deal could cost you aprox $10,000 to $12,000 drive away done properly, yeah i know every body has a mate that did one for 3 grand, i call BS.

A new motor will be out of the question for a while. For the time being, I could do the conversion, and look for a 308 down the track that will bolt straight in place of the 253. The old 1HZ is getting tired, so I will need to look at this soon.

I have looked around and done the math.
A 6.5 chev V* into the 80, done right wont see much change from 15grand. But!!! that's with not only a realiable engine, but drive train as well.
The gen III's run well. But I prefer a diesel. Going from a 1HZ, even tired to a 253 will cost a shite load more to run as you will be flogging it to get going everytime you start off from standing.
However, if doing this as a inbetween before sloting in a larger engine, it might be worth doing but will cost more int he long term, however this might work out better for you.
My personal choice is the 1HZ with turbo and intercooled. Mine is running 16psi with fuel compensator and I love it. goes just as hard, and further than a mates 60 with the 6.5 in it, in a straight line it might not pick up as much, but then in a straight line I would still own my old ricer.
When are you looking at doing this bear?

i have a 1HZ in my 80series and it has 539,000 and it is still going strong at that milage they are only just run in they are good for a million km so i recon you would be better off getting the 1HZ freshened up and if you have the money turbo it and you will have all the power you need and then you know that there is not going to be any problems with trying to find adapters and a fan and a radiator to keep it all cool and modifying this and modifying that just to keep it running especially if ti a daily driver (yes i know i have a zook with a lot of custom work done to it but its not on the road or finished yet and it is just a play thing)

Chucky, I have purchased a 47 Series that has this motor in it attached to a four speed. I have already sold the wheels and tyres for more than I payed for the car, so at the moment, i'm in front. If it's not worth doing this swap, I will off load the car and hope that my current motor will hold out until I have the money to buy a bigger one. This rig only gets used for off-road work, not driven every day. I am looking at putting 4.88 or bigger diff gears in to accomadate the 36" swampers I just scored. Hoping the diff gears will help out with lack of power a little.

gympie ARB quoted me under $3000 to have a turbo put on my 1HZ with some things done buti cant remember what they said they would do sorry as it was last year sometime that they did my injector pump and i recomend them for doing injector pumps as they only charged me around the $6-700 mark for a full rebuild

Im here for the sausage!
i would use a 304, gen 3 or the 6litre.
i got a 304 with computer for $1050. i got an adaptor kit (mines from a TH400 to GQ transfer case) $510 i got it on fleabay i just waited a month or so for 1 to come up.
and the engine mounts were from marks.
and it took abit of playing about with wiring but did it all at home thanks to some really handy mates.

and the other is keep the 253 for when you get a boat and need an anchor
.
another thing to consider if chucking an old donk in your 80 series is you will have to run it on straight gas to get an engineers certificate,i just bought a 302 cleveland plus 5 speed and transfer plus the whole kit including engine mounts to bolt into a 60 series land cruiser for 800 off this site,to replace the siezed 2h in my other 60
u should be able to find a 308 cheap, but like as hasd been said, even an injected dunnydore 304 can be had pretty cheaply,id personly go that way over a 253

why not just get a 4.5 the bell housing will bolt straight up
the loom can be swaped over from a wreak could be done in a weekend!!!
more power than a stock 308 or worked 253
plus direct bolt in, would not be very expencive
plus it is still a toyota
