Sierra Fuel tank bash guard

Post by nicbeer »

Hey,

I am going to either make one or get a sheety to bend one up for me like below. Going to be 2-3mm galv i think. Bolt on. Std tank for now. long range will come when more $$ is available.

how much gap would you leave between the plate and tank at the top and also would it need side reinforcement?

also would u run some rubber or silicon on the plate between tank and plate

Hey Nic I got exactly that made up in 3mm gal for my vit EFI tank. Have got a layer of 12mm HD closed cell foam to sandwich between it and the tank. SHould be better than no protection at all. although I might try and sqash the foam down to 10mm.

I got mine bent up for $50 inc materials and labour.

ive been using a 3mm plate guard on my tank for a few years now and iv had to re-inforce it as it has dented badly and pressed into the tank. all i did was weld some braces to the sides (10mm rhs)

want to make one of these myself. Has anyone got a drawing with measurements I can build to? Would save me a lot of hassle getting under the car to measure everything up.

No foam on top and sides, just underneath as this is where the majority of hits are going to come from.

When we measured it up I allowed 10mm gap under the tank to squeeze in 12mm of foam. Nice tight fit.

I'm thinking rather than leaving a gap if the tank cops a hit the HD foam will absorb and spread the impact over the whole bottom of the tank...little bit like a bike helmet type protection. In saying this since i've had the 34s I don't think I have bashed my tank at all.

That guy flogging the same thing on ebay for $200 is dreaming! If anyone wants SWB EFI vitara tank measurements I'll post them up.

Hi, have similar on mine but also had to reinforce it - simply isn't strong enough on it's own for other than very minor dings - welded angle along the edges of mine - hasn't been a problem since.

As for measurements, I've lost my template - just measure and make a mock one from cardboard first - if I can do it I'm sure you can!

also know someone who has a sheet metal bender ;)

yea i recon a 3mm minimum thickness. 1.6 would'nt last long at all.

start looking for sheets of 3mm metal or alloy nic if u can afford it and then we'll just cut and weld alloy, it wil look like a drop tank to then.

or checker plate would be tough.

Lex

If i can get u all dimensions on a diagram can u get them folded up for minimal $ or are u saying we'll weld one up instead of getting one bent?

rather not checker as wont slide over anything. steel is fine as alloy i think wont be strong enough once it has had a hit or 2

we could just fold them ourselfs using his bender, its a pretty big one so pretty sure it could handle 3 mm steel. ill ask him tomorrow.
